Oregon's Willamette Valley is the most-heralded wine region in the state, and home to some of the best Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris produced anywhere, aided in part by the especially cool growing season. The region is divided into two sub-regions, the North Willamette and South Willamette, and is named for the river of the same name which flows past the city of Portland.

Oregon didn't burst onto the wine scene until the 1980s, but it has since carved out a name for itself as a world-class region for cooler weather wines like Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. It's most famous for the former, with many critically-acclaimed Pinot Noirs originating in the region. The Willamette Valley is Oregon's most famous and most productive region. Other notable regions include the Rogue Valley, Walla Walla, and Columbia Valley.

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

A deep but transparent, youthful electric ruby, the 2021 Pinot Noir Antoinette is high-toned and floral, with notes of fresh pine needles, mint, grenadine, and wildflowers. Medium-bodied, with good tension, it has a fresh herbal slanting tone on the palate and notes of wet asphalt on the finish. With ripe, angular tannins and a driven, linear edge, it will benefit from another year or two in bottle and drink well over the following 6–8 years. (Audrey Frick)

This lithe and graceful Pinot Noir is made with fruit from a 40-year-old block at Temperance Hill Vineyard. Earthy aromas of loamy soil and oregano flirt with tart boysenberries and bbq short ribs. Raspberry fruit and traces of peach and espresso are nicely balanced with velvety tannins and crisp acidity. Enjoy now until 2032. (Michael Alberty)

A fresh and wild pinot with aromas of cherry stones, orange peel, soil, hibiscus and thyme. It’s medium-bodied with powdery tannins, crisp acidity and a mineral, earthy finish. Drink now. Screw cap. (James Suckling)

A fresh burst of wild strawberries, cloves and minty herbs introduces the 2021 Pinot Noir Provocateur. It’s soothing and round with a wiry textural frame and tart wild berries elevated by brisk acidity. The 2021 finishes classically dry with a slowly fading staining concentration over a bed of gently grippy tannins. (Eric Guido)

Shimmering red. Highly perfumed aromas of red currant, strawberry, candied rose and peppery spices pick up subtle vanilla and smoky mineral notes as the wine opens up. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering subtly sweet red berry, cherry and blood orange flavors that deepen and become sweeter on the back half. Shows impressive depth to the sweet raspberry, cherry and rose pastille flavors, with no excess fat; a spine of zesty acidity lends structure. Closes spicy, subtly smoky and quite long, with rounded, even tannins and a lingering floral note.

Bright red. Smoke-accented black raspberry, cherry and candied rose scents, along with hints of licorice and musky underbrush. Chewy, sweet and lively on the palate, offering concentrated red and blue fruit and spicecake flavors that pick up a hint of minerality on the back half. Dusty tannins add shape to a floral-driven, impressively long finish that leaves behind sappy red berry liqueur and savory herb notes.
