District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

This complex and well-balanced wine seamlessly blends black fruits, oak spices and a beefy accent on a full body backed by moderate tannins. It feels velvety, almost silky, but has the structure to improve with age. Best from 2025. (Jim Gordon)
RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Sep 2022
A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Hess Collection Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder Estate Grown is gently herbal and cedary up front, with deep layers of blueberry, cassis and loam backing up those initial impressions. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it finishes long, with dusty tannins and a savory touch of black olive. (Joe Czerwinski)
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 7, 2022
A very soft and friendly red with plum and blackberry character. Medium body with medium firm tannins and a delicious finish. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 17% malbec and 3% petit verdot. Drink now. (James Suckling)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Shows a toasty overlay, with singed vanilla coating a core of blackberry, black cherry and boysenberry paste flavors. A tug of loam and a cedary frame emerge on the finish. Offers more oomph than purity, with the toasty edge asserting itself through the finish. Best from 2023 through 2034. 6,300 cases made. (James Molesworth)

This is an approachable, likable and hearty red, blending mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Petite Sirah, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot. A spicy rich berry nose leads to plush, soft and toasted notes of oak that will widely appeal. (Virginie Boone)

Boysenberry and açaí berry fruit gives this a slightly exotic profile, but it’s finely stitched with apple wood, sassafras and singed anise notes to keep it honest. The polished finish lets a chaparral note chime through the flashy fruit. This should have fans for sure. Drink now through 2036. 66,186 cases made. (James Molesworth)
JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, March 6, 2024
From their Pope Valley vineyard, this wine is rich and relaxed, warm with oak spices and broad in baked cherries and dark plums. Aged in both French and American barrels for a supple, soft effect and lingering finish. (James Suckling)

Lush and deeply fruity, with crushed plum, mulled blackberry and açaí berry compote flavors that meld nicely together, while melted black licorice, black tea and mulling spice notes add range and detail. Features a lushness that makes this approachable now, but shows a strong underlying iron spine that will let this evolve with cellaring. Best from 2023 through 2036. 4,464 cases made.

A fruity cabernet with currant, black-cherry and berry aromas and flavors. Medium-to full-bodied with soft tannins and a juicy finish. Yummy now. Drink or hold.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2021
Blended with small amounts of Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec, this likable pour offers perfumed red fruit and bright acidity within a full-bodied, integrated core of smooth texture. A background of herbal notes complements the dense black cherry and blackberry core.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021
A polished, direct style, with warmed plum and blackberry fruit laced with cocoa and tobacco notes. A rounded edge on the finish makes this accessible now, but there’s enough for brief cellaring. Drink now through 2025. 91,500 cases made.

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2016
The last bottled wine I tasted is also spectacular, and rivals the finest wines ever made at Hess — the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate The Lion. It is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot and obviously a cuvée meant to be the best Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine they produce. They didn’t make it in 2009, 2010, 2011 or 2012, so this is the first vintage in some time. Inky purple in color it offers notes of lead pencil shavings, white flowers, blueberries and blackberries. The Mt. Veeder hallmark of blue fruits and white flowers definitely comes through in this supple, opaque purple wine that is full-bodied, built like a skyscraper and super-impressive. If this is what we can continue to expect from Hess Collection, they are on a quick, express elevator to the top. There are 431 cases of this gorgeous wine.
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2017
A new, high-end offering from this producer, this wine is made to celebrate and luxuriate in the appellation, which it does in its ying-yang of dark chocolate and cedar. Bright acidity uplifts a soft, creamy texture and firm, subtle tannin, allowing the blackberry bramble to speak.
SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2016
Though big and intense, this is also polished, revealing a sense of refinement and elegance. Offers a core of licorice-scented blackberry, wild berry, cedar, herb, mocha and underbrush flavors. Ends with well-integrated tannins. Drink now through 2030. 431 cases made.

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2017
Composed of 81% Cabernet, 16% Malbec and a dollop a Petit Verdot, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Mt. Veeder has a very deep purple-black color and nose of crushed blackcurrants, blackberries and plums with hints of cedar chest, dried Provence herbs, rose petals and menthol with a hint of rare beef. Full-bodied, concentrated and vibrant in the mouth, it has tons of energy framed by grainy tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long and earthy.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2018
A powerful, dense wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mount Veeder) packs plenty of mountain structure and complexity to play off the rich, dense fruit. Espresso, mocha, black cherry, new leather and spice add myriad shades of nuance to a wine endowed with real character.
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2017
Juicy black cherry and grippy oak are the stars of the show in this delicious red wine, softened by the addition of 16% Malbec. Elongated tannins support the leathery texture as highlights of cedar and sage play on.

This is an approachable, majority stainless-steel fermented white that is well made and aged in French oak, with a richness of vanilla bean, crème brûlée and oak. Serviceable, it is made in a robust style with floral flourishes that appeal. (Virginie Boone)
