Critical Acclaim

WS93 Wine & Spirits 06/22

"More than half of the fruit for this wine comes from the Josef Vineyard, with the balance from HJW and Magdalena, all estate grown. The fruit character is defined by richness and concentration—exotic apple, caramel, pear and peach with golden botrytis accents, a depth of flavor that brings to mind cashews and hazelnuts. Focus its gathering power on Caribbean food." (93 pts.)

RP90 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 21st Apr 2022

"The 2020 Riesling Late Harvest comes in with 52 grams of residual sugar and 9.6% alcohol. This is a blend of vineyards: mostly Josef (50%) and Magdalena (40%), with a little HJW. The grapes were about 25% botrytis affected. This is, of course, where you get a little past merely “off-dry” in the lineup. It’s not sweet enough to be a full-blown dessert wine, but it is obviously sweeter than, say, the Semi-Dry. It’s perfect to drink on its own. There’s not much of an acidic core, though, and the fruit and sugar are clearly in control. I still liked this a lot. The price is reasonable in the lineup and it will be another wine that is in a crowd-pleasing style. It should hold for another decade, at least, but I doubt that this vintage will be the very best one to age. (Mark Squires)" (90 pts.)

WE90 Wine Enthusiast 10/1/2022

"Sourced from a blend of estate sites, this late-harvest Riesling offers aromas of pithy grapefruit, pineapple and peach on the nose. The rounded palate displays bright tropical and stone fruit flavors matched by lemon and honey. It ends bright, lifted and juicy thank to refreshing acidity. (Alexander Peartree)" (90 pts.)

Finger Lakes

Officially established in 1982, the Finger Lakes region has a storied history of wine production in New York State and is recognized the world over. The deep glacially formed lakes offer sublime growing conditions thanks to the sloping hillsides and moderating effect the lakes have on the temperature of the surrounding area.

The main growing regions are centered around Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake (which each have their own AVAs) but quality wine is being made throughout the region. Riesling is the belle of the ball in the Finger Lakes (oftentimes being compared to the Rieslings of Germany) but success has been had with Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and others.

United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.
