When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Aromas of blackberries, black truffles, burnt orange peel, forest floor and blueberries. Decadent. Full to medium body. The tannins are so tight and dense with super fine and caressing texture. An amazing, mesmerizing wine. Drinkable and glorious, but better after 2022.
RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2018
The 2016 IX Proprietary Red Estate is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple, it comes strutting out of the glass with flamboyant Black Forest cake, blueberry compote and plum pudding notions plus hints of spice cake, unsmoked cigars, menthol, licorice and dusty soil and accented by wafts of tar and black tea. The palate is full-bodied yet incredibly poised and vibrant with amazing freshness and very fine-grained, very firm tannins. It possesses the most provocative earthy sparks, providing arresting depth to the very long, beautifully perfumed finish. Stunning.
VN97+97+ pts. - Vinous - Dec 2018
The 2016 IX Estate is a total knock-out. A wine of exceptional balance and harmony, the 2016 is stunning from the very first taste. Nothing really stands out. Instead, it is the wine’s sense of proportion that makes the most lasting impression. Seamless, layered and voluptuous to the core, the 2016 has so much to offer. Bright Pritchard Hill acids and minerality are felt on the persistent, beautifully sculpted finish.
SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2019
Lush and warm in feel, with gorgeous fig, black currant and dark plum fruit that rolls through in harmonious waves against a backdrop of loam, alder and smoldering cast iron notes. Not shy on power, latent cut and inner freshness, this just needs time to unwind fully. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2021 through 2038. 1,800 cases made. RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2018
A blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot and 8% Cabernet Franc aged in 40% new oak, the 2016 Proprietary Red Wine is deep purple-black in color and quite reticent at this youthful stage to begin, offering up subtle notions of potpourri, Indian spices, cigar box and iron ore over a core of crushed blackberries and black cherries with intermittent wafts of black and red currants, new leather and smoked meats. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a densely packed mid-palate and oodles of freshness framed by very ripe, finely grained tannins and laced with compelling earthy accents. It offers incredible vibrancy with tons of black and red fruit sparkle in the mid-palate leading to a provocative mineral element on the very long finish. If I could give more than 100 for this one, I would. To be released in May 2019.
JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, December 17, 2018
The opulence of fresh flowers and dark fruit is so impressive. There’s so much going on, from flowers to currants. The palate is full and powerful, but what impresses most are the ripe tannins and the amazing poise at the finish. Tightens down at the end. A blend of 84 per cent cabernet sauvignon, eight per cent petit verdot and eight per cent cabernet franc. Drink in 2021.
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2018
The 2016 Dominus is a dark, somber wine. I don’t quite see the explosive energy of the 2013 or 2010, not the seductiveness of the 2012, but the 2016 has a distinct charm that is all its own. Quite frankly, I can’t remember a young Dominus with this combination of fruit density, freshness and polished tannins. A huge center of fruit emerge with time in the glass in a big, large-scaled Dominus that should provide readers with a long drinking window of pure pleasure once some of the baby fat wears off.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2019
This marries a range of old-school savory, tobacco, chestnut and bay leaf notes with a dense and muscular core of dark currant and blackberry fruit, all backed by a loam-swaddled finish. Long and dense, but defined, with the fruit steadily emerging to win out in the end. Patience is required. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2023 through 2040. 5,500 cases made. (James Molesworth)

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Martha’s Vineyard barely hints at eucalyptus on the nose, with much more emphasis given to black cherries and cassis. This is full-bodied and rich, nicely balancing richness and texture against linear shape and focus and picking up hints of blueberries and spice on the long, mouthwatering finish. With 112 barrels having been bottled, there’s a fair bit of this wine to go around, if one can afford it. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2021
This throws off an overt and alluring mint aroma, while sweet bay leaf, violet, damson plum, red tea and steeped griotte notes all glide through together, carried by remarkably fine-grained tannins. Ends with a gentle echo of mint on the finish, while a subtle minerality chimes through as well. A stylish and suave wine, with plenty of charm now, but also pristine balance for cellaring. Best from 2022 through 2038. 2,500 cases made. (James Molesworth)

VN100100 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2018
The highlight in this range today, the 2016 Cariad is utterly magnificent. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot give the wine soaring aromatic intensity and striking savoriness to play off the racy, forward fruit. Time in barrel has done wonders to meld all the elements together. Today, the Cariad is dense, explosive and super-expressive. And yet my sense is that the 2016 still has quite a bit of room to grow. Even at this early stage, the 2016 is a total stunner. The symbiosis of David Abreu fruit and Allision Tauziet’s winemaking makes for an electric, unforgettable 2016. Don’t miss it.
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2019
Rich and very suave in style, with a gorgeous core of pure plum, blackberry and cassis notes sailing through the long finish, which is supported by a well-buried graphite edge that allows the creamy feel to gain the upper hand while keeping everything grounded. A beautiful display of restrained power. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. To be released March 2020. Best from 2021 through 2035. 750 cases made. (James Molesworth)

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Proprietary Red EE Tench Vineyard is scented of pure plums and ripe blueberries with redcurrants and touches of lavender, roses, bay leaves and dusty earth. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm, fine-grained, vibrant and refreshing, finishing long and perfumed. 1,403 cases produced.
VN94+94–97 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2018
Lifted aromatics give the 2016 Red Wine EE Tench Vineyard a dimension of breadth and expansiveness that is alluring. The red cherry, plum, mocha and spice flavors are racy in this dense, explosive wine. The EE is shaping up to be another gem from Russell Bevan.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2019
Offers a lavish feel, with waves of crushed plum, blackberry and açaí berry flavors rolling forth, infused liberally with dark licorice, sweet toast and fruitcake notes. A late tug of dark earth keeps this just honest enough. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2020 through 2032. 1,403 cases made. (James Molesworth)

RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
Marked by scents of bay leaf, sage, cherries and cassis, the full-bodied 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Trailside Vineyard is dense but with a classic linear Cabernet structure. Quite sculpted and fresh for valley-floor fruit, it’s focused and long on the finish, gently dusty but firm. Once a walnut grove, the vineyard extends from the Silverado Trail down toward the Napa River, with this bottling using fruit from both the rocky, lower bench section of the vineyard near the road and a sandier parcel closer to the river. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2021
Fresh, with racy red currant, Damson and red cherry fruit flavors running through. Flecked with light savory notes and hints of sassafras, with an iron note lacing the piercing finish. Latent grip too, so cellar for maximum effect. Drink now through 2035. 2,500 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Another stand out in this set of new releases, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is powerful and deep, but very much in the mid-weight style that defines the Peirson Meyer wines. Tobacco, cedar, smoke, leather and licorice add savoriness and nuance to this super-expressive Cabernet Sauvignon. This is an especially bright and elegant style for Kenefick Ranch.

The deep purple-black colored 2016 Nomad Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane is a little youthfully subdued to begin, opening out to reveal tantalizing glimpses of baked redcurrants, cassis, chocolate-covered cherries and mulberries with nuances of crushed rocks, tilled black soil and violets. Full-bodied and sporting layers of tightly wound black fruits and earth-inspired flavors, it has a firm, fine-grained frame and a very long, multifaceted finish. A stunning expression of Dr. Crane!
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2019
This is a tart, tangy and tense red from the legendary vineyard, soft and velvety lush on the midpalate. Caramelized oak cradles baked cherry and cranberry, the layers complex and lengthy with seasonings of clove and nutmeg. Enjoy 2021–2030.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2019
A flicker of savory adds lift and energy to the waves of warmed plum, cassis and cherry preserves that glide through. The structure is polished, the finish long, with an anise note checking in at the end. Drink now through 2030. 190 cases made. (James Molesworth)

VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2016 Melbury is powerful and yet medium in body, with layers of exotic spice, dark red cherry, blood orange, leather, licorice and star anise that give it an exotic character I don’t remember seeing in the past. Despite its mid-weight profile, the Melbury has plenty of supporting structure. Over the last year, the Melbury has gained a bit of weight, but remains quite focused. Sometimes the Melbury suffers by being the first vineyard-designate poured at Bond. Its remarkable allure is evident nonetheless. This is an impressive showing.
RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Sep 2019
Overlooking Lake Hennessy up on Pritchard Hill, Melbury vineyard has produced a beautifully elegant and vivacious signature in 2016, which clearly reveals the personality that this incredible site tends to want to give. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Melbury comes bounding out of the glass with expressive black and red currants notes followed by wild blueberries, warm plums, pencil shavings and wild sage plus wafts of lavender and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is practically electric with energetic fruit, framed by firm, grainy tannins and invigorating freshness, finishing long and minerally.
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 16, 2020
Featuring currant and fig notes, this offers a juicy, slightly rounded feel, revealing melted licorice, sweet tobacco and warm gravel accents along the way. Shows most of its muscle on the finish and shuts down a bit in the glass, indicating that cellaring is required. Best from 2022 through 2040. 370 cases made. (James Molesworth)
