Geyser Peak Walking Tree Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 / 750 ml.

Item#: 70678

RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2014
I enjoyed the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Walking Tree. It revealed more length, depth and texture than some of its siblings along with abundant notes of blackcurrants intermixed with hints of oak and earth. Spicy, medium to full-bodied and well-made, it should drink well for 7–8 years.

Where It's From

District / Sonoma County

View more wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.

Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.

Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

Region / California

View more wines from California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

View more wines from United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2012 Proprietary Red is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, aged in 100% new French oak from some of the best coopers in France, Darnajou, Taransaud, and Gamba. This wine is a stunner. A terrific nose of blackcurrants, cedar wood, white chocolate, and blackberries rolls out of the glass with serious intensity. Beautiful texture, remarkable purity, sweet, supple tannins, and layers of fruit and extract that are not heavy or out of balance all cascade over the palate. This is a stunning wine, and like so many 2012s, exuberant and showy already. It should continue to drink well for at least another 15 or more years. (Robert M. Parker, Jr.)

A deep, layered wine, Dalla Valle’s 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon possesses fabulous richness and texture to match its rich contours. Silky tannins shape the succulent finish in a Cabernet Sauvignon that captures the very best of the vintage. Sweet red cherry, plum, spice, new leather and mocha are laced into the exotic, voluptuous finish. Today, the 2012 speaks to polish above all else. This is a stunning 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon (virtually all Cabernet Sauvignon) exhibits rich blackcurrant, forest floor, unsmoked cigar tobacco, and hints of licorice and new barriques. Dominated by its fruit, this full-bodied, plush, opulent wine is a seamless, classic example of hillside Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. It can be drunk early, but should age effortlessly for two decades or more.

Bryant’s flagship wine, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate vineyard on Pritchard Hill offers a rare but magnificent forest floor/floral aromatic profile with lavishly rich, ripe notes of crème de cassis, blueberry and black raspberry liqueur. Fleshy, opulent, full-bodied and multidimensional, it conceals some significant tannins behind its wealth of extract and fruit. From a first-growth quality, hillside vineyard (13 acres), this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is gorgeously pure as well as impeccably well-balanced with a seamless integration of tannin, acidity, alcohol and wood. In fact, the new oak component, which is significant, is largely obliterated by the wine’s stunning fruit. This majestic Cabernet Sauvignon should age effortlessly for 25–30 years.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2014
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is silky, layered and very polished throughout. Red cherry, spice cake, crushed flowers and mint are laced together in a gracious, mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon. Hints of orange peel and cinnamon add an exotic flair as the wine opens up. Bryant’s 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is quite pretty, but it should really be more than that. It should be viscerally thrilling in the way the best vintages are.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2015
Rustic and pleasantly chewy, this offers a rich, extracted core of dusty currant and blackberry flavors, ending with a stream of gravel, anise, tar and cedar notes. Drink now through 2028. 1,000 cases made.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Hershey Vineyard has developed into a round, sumptuous Howell Mountain wine with the soft contours and exceptional overall balance. Iron, sweet red cherry, plum, smoke and licorice meld together in an open-knit yet structured Cabernet Sauvignon with tons of sheer appeal. The exotic, savory/mineral bouquet is pure Howell, but there is also a softness to the 2012 that makes it incredibly appealing, even today. A final kick of Howell Mountain tannin lingers on the close. As always, the Hershey is the most vivid and structured of the Dana Cabernets.
RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Hershey Vineyard comes from an 1,800-foot elevation and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon harvested October 19–22. This is a sensational superstar from Howell Mountain with an inky purple color, notes of mocha, mulberry, crème de cassis, graphite and spring flowers. It is dense, full-bodied, opulent and concentrated with sweet but moderate tannin. This is a stunner that should drink well for another 25 or so years.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2015
A blockbuster, showing torque and drive, this is dense and chewy, with massive, extracted, earth- and cedar-laced dark berry, graphite and oak elements, complemented by potent tannins. Needs time. Drink now through 2030. 312 cases made.

The dark fruit aromas flow out of the glass with blueberry, blackberry and licorice character. Hints of minerals and wet earth too. Full body with ultra-fine tannins and a gorgeous finish. So lovely to drink. Balanced and refined. Second wine of Grace. Drink or hold.

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Aug 2015
Probably the longest-lived wine in the vintage from Santa Barbara, Jonata’s 630-case 2012 El Desafio de Jonata checks in as a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc, 15% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot that saw 80% new French oak. It reveals a masculine, meaty, structured personality as well as rockin’ notes of blackcurrants, wood smoke, lead pencil shavings and crushed rock. Full-bodied, balanced and with building tannic grip, it still shows the suppleness of the vintage, but needs 2–3 years to even start to be drinkable. It will have 2–3 decades of longevity.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2015
The Cabernet Sauvignon-based 2012 El Desafio de Jonata graces the palate with its sensual personality. Raspberry jam, pomegranate, leather, smoke, spice and tobacco all blossom in the glass. Big, rich and inviting, the 2012 boasts superb intensity and resonance, although it doesn’t quite have the visceral thrill of the very best wines in this range. Shades of rose petal and mint add the closing shades of nuance. The 2012 was aged in French oak, 80% new.

RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015
The 2012 La Joie, which is a blend of 76% Cabernet, 12% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, blew me away. A profound effort, with 55% of it coming from Hillsides in Alexander Valley, 31% from Knights Valley and the balance from Chalk Hill, the wine shows great minerality, oodles of crème de cassis fruit, incense, licorice, crushed rock, and a provocative full-throttle mouthfeel. A wine of great intensity, purity and equilibrium, this definitely begs for 4–7 years of bottle aging and should drink well for at least 30+ years.
ST95+95–98 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - May/Jun 2014
Bright ruby. Pungent, sappy, mineral-driven aromas of dark berries, licorice, bitter chocolate and coffee liqueur. Remarkably layered and deep, boasting great mid-palate energy and spicy lift. Noble tannins saturate the palate on the extremely long, mounting back end. Still a baby (the wine was just racked to tank in late February) but potentially monumental.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2016
Dark cherries, smoke, graphite, licorice, menthol and plums are some of the notes that open up in the 2012 La Joie. Here the flavors are bold, intense and incisive, with notable freshness and intensity. Give this large-scaled Cabernet Sauvignon-based red another few years in bottle. The finish alone is striking.
VN93+93–95 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2015
The 2012 La Joie hits the palate with serious depth, power and structure. Dark plums, blackberry jam, graphite, grilled herbs and smoke literally jump from the glass. Deep, powerful and brooding, the 2012 is likely to require at least a few years to come together, but it is compelling, even at this early stage.

Another winner, and a big, juicy style of wine (which seems to be Craig Becker’s Midas touch) is the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine, which sees some new oak, is a powerhouse with rich, concentrated blackberry and cassis fruit, some dusty, loamy soil notes, real succulence and a fleshy, opulent mouthfeel. Drink it over the next 15 or more years.

Aromatic lift, precision and intensity are the signatures of the 2012 Maya. Savory herbs, mint, violets, spices and red cherry jam are woven together in an intricate fabric of flavors and textures that captivate all the senses. Pure power and finesse are rarely found together to this degree. Readers who can find the 2012 are in for a real treat. This is an utterly magnificent Maya.
VN98+98+ pts. - Vinous - Oct 2015
The 2012 Maya is surprisingly deep and powerful in this vintage, with none of the early appeal of the estate’s other 2012s. Today, the Maya is dark and brooding, with tons of intensity to match its massive, virile personality. Readers will have to be patient, but the 2012 is a special wine that much is clear.
RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014
Dalla Valle was the first winery to demonstrate what heights Cabernet Franc could reach in the valley with their Maya proprietary blend, which averages 50–55% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2012 Maya is a spectacular offering. I recently had the 1991 (made by Tony Soter) and it is still drinking exceptionally well. In fact, it could still be called an adolescent at 23 years of age. The 2012 Maya is already revealing great complexity with notes of forest floor, licorice, truffles, red and blackcurrants and a hint of graphite. The beautiful aromatics are followed by an equally majestic, full-bodied, multidimensional wine of great class and elegance. This sensational effort should drink well for 25–30 years.

Napa Valley Red Wine
2012 / 750 ml.

VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2015
Black cherry jam, sweet spices, leather, mint and tobacco open up in the 2012 Sloan. Today the 2012 is succulent and super-expressive, with myriad of shades of dark red cherry, pomegranate, spice and new leather that develop. The flavors are deep and bold, with tons of vintage 2012 voluptuousness allied to significant palate presence. This is an especially exotic, unctuous Cabernet Sauvignon that pushes ripeness to the edge. All the elements are in the right place. Readers who enjoy modern, racy Napa Valley Cabernets will find much to admire in the 2012.
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014
Owned by the Chinese Pan family, but still featuring Michel Rolland as its winemaking consultant, the 2012 Proprietary Red Blend Sloan has turned out beautifully. The vintage gives it a precocious silkiness that is atypical. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it showcases this fabulous terroir on the steep hillsides of the Vaca mountains, behind the luxury resort of Auberge du Soleil. The 2012 offers up beautiful notes of blueberries, blackberries, cedarwood, graphite, espresso, licorice and chocolate along with copious quantities of glycerin and fruit. This is a big, surprisingly savory and fleshy effort from Sloan that comes closest stylistically to their magnificent 2002. It can be drunk now but will be even better in 7–8 years, and should keep for 25–30 years.
VN94+94–97 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2014
A dark, voluptuous beauty, the 2012 Sloan Estate is a terrific example of the vintage. The flavors are rich, enveloping and ample, yet the wine retains the signature freshness of this hillside site. Dark red cherry, plums, new leather and exotic spices open up as this racy, exceptionally polished wine shows off its considerable personality. I imagine the 2012 will enjoy a long and broad drinking window once it is released. The 2012 was still in barrel when I tasted it in October 2012. Hopefully it will go into bottle with the same exciting combination of fruit, aromatics and texture that are present today.
