Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

This is really alive, with a burst of kirsch, plum and blackberry notes leading off, followed by waves of black tea, melted black licorice and warm fruitcake. Long and lush through the finish, but maintains detail and energy. Best from 2021 through 2034. 200 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

There’s a single foudre of the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape, and it’s all destemmed Grenache from the sandy soils of the Font de Loup and Saint Georges lieux-dits. Kirsch, blackberries, orange zest, and flowery incense notes all give way to a medium to full-bodied Grenache that offers a layered, seamless texture, building tannins, and a great finish. This classic, elegant wine has loads of character and is another example of a great terroir in the hands of incredible winemakers.
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 6, 2020
Coming from cooler, sandy soils and all Grenache, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape reveals a medium ruby/purple hue to go with perfumed notes of kirsch liqueur, wild strawberries, flowery incense, and orange blossom. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has a seamless texture, ripe, silky tannins, and a great finish. It’s not a blockbuster, but it just glides over the palate with no sensation of weight or heaviness and has beautiful length on the finish. Enjoy this elegant, nuanced 2018 Châteauneuf du Pape any time over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

All Grenache from the lieux-dits of la Crau and Font du Loup, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape is relatively light in color, but don’t mistake that for being light or wimpy. Black cherries, red raspberries and hints of plum combine on the nose with hints of garrigue and licorice, while the full-bodied palate is silky and elegant despite being labeled at 15.5% alcohol. There’s ample length and no perceptible heat on the finish, but I’d still opt to enjoy it over its first 6–8 years or so.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Shimmering ruby. Expressive, mineral-accented raspberry and boysenberry aromas are complemented by suggestions of licorice and pungent flowers. Seamless in texture and well-concentrated, offering sweet red berry and cherry liqueur and floral pastille flavors and building spiciness. Rich yet energetic in style, finishing with fine clarity, repeating florality and harmonious tannins that sneak in late.

A blend of 50% Mourvèdre, 40% Syrah and 10% Grenache, the 2018 Lirac La Lorentine combines notes of cola, plums, blueberries and black olives on the nose. It’s full-bodied, concentrated, silky and long, with a hint of licorice on the finish. It’s a damn good-looking Lirac.

A big step up, the 2018 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is a remarkable effort offering gorgeous black raspberries, garrigue, spice, and floral aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, pure, and balanced, with beautiful depth of fruit, it’s up with the top wines in the vintage. This cuvée is 90% Grenache and the balance Syrah and Mourvèdre, fermented with lots of stems, and aged in once- and twice-used barrels followed by a year in foudre. 625 cases. (Jeb Dunnuck)
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021
Spicy hits of clove, nutmeg and cinnamon entice on the nose of this full-bodied, luminous red. An invigorating blend of Grenache (80%), Mourvèdre (10%) and Syrah (10%), it offers youthful blackberry and plum flavors etched by hints of lavender, sage and bramble. A lovely, unadorned expression of Gigondas best now–2030.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Sep 2020
The 2018 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is 80% Grenache, with the remaining 20% split equally between Mourvèdre and Syrah. Two-thirds of the fruit was undestemmed, and the wine matured in previously used barrels for 10 months, then in foudre. It’s a top-flight effort, with soaring aromas of herbal tea and red raspberries. Medium to full-bodied, it’s silky in texture, with a long, vibrant finish that ends in a flurry of soft tannins.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 24, 2021
A dark, winey version, with black currant and black cherry paste flavors laced with tobacco, warm earth and singed apple wood notes. This has good energy through the finish, with a finishing kick of bramble and wood spice. Drink now through 2030. 750 cases made, 30 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Excellent harmony of full body, moderately dry tannins and richness. The red fruits are now beautifully developed and there’s just a hint of tar. A grenache-based blend that was matured completely in large oak foudre casks. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2023
Round and softened by time, this wine's bottle aging has brought out softened tobacco notes that layer over cherry and bitter almond skin. Reveals orange peel acidity and cocoa bean on the palate, with campfire and olive tapenade accents. Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah. Drink now through 2028. 20,000 cases made, 2,500 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)
JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/15/2022
From a vintage that yielded forward, charming wines, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape has a ripe, seamless, medium-bodied profile as well as outstanding aromatics of both red and black fruits, peppery herbs, and touch of flowery incense. It’s elegant, has plenty of fruit, and a great finish. Drink it any time over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
