Critical Acclaim

ST94+ Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar May/Jun 2013

"Saturated medium ruby. Sexy ripe-yet-cool aromas of cassis, blueberry, boysenberry, coffee and smoky oak, with complicating notes of mocha, licorice and leather. Sweet, lush and deep, with captivating smoky, gamey nuances to the very primary flavors of dark berries, minerals and licorice. Finishes with substantial but fine-grained tannins and perfectly integrated acidity.  Aged in 78% new oak: Cakebread prefers Darnajou and Ana barrels, followed by Taransaud. Potentially the finest vintage I’ve tasted to date under this label, although I also loved the 2008." (94+? pts.)

WE89 Wine Enthusiast 12/1/2013

"This Cab, which contains small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, is the poster child for the modern Napa style of exceptional fruitiness, softness and sweet oakiness. You’ll either love the mélange of blackberries, cherries and mocha, or you’ll find it overbearing." (89 pts.)

VN94 Vinous Nov 2013

"Dark black cherries, plums, mocha, spices and new leather all flesh out in the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon. Today the 2010 is rich, deep and full of intensity. Tobacco, wild flowers and savory herbs all add complexity over time, but the 2010 isn’t ready yet to deliver maximum pleasure. Another few years in bottle should do the trick. The 2010 is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot, mostly from Oakville and St. Helena. The Petit Verdot is from a site in Coombsville." (94 pts.)

SP94 Wine Spectator Oct 31, 2013

"Beautifully balanced, tight and well-built, this is an understated style, with a firm, structured mix of dried berry, cedar, currant and crushed rock, gaining depth and richness on the finish, where the flavors unfold gracefully. Drink now through 2024. 217 cases made." (94 pts.)

RP95 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 30th Oct 2013

"I also tasted an Amador County Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre blend from the Shaker Ridge Ranch that I thought was excellent, but this report is about Napa Valley, so it is not included in these reviews. However, Gallica’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is a winner! A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot, it combines power and elegance in a full-bodied style with good structure, sweet but noticeable tannin and authoritative flavor intensity (black currants, licorice, underbrush and unsmoked cigar tobacco). This deep, penetrating, intense Cabernet reveals admirably integrated acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood. Enjoy this impressive 2010 now and over the next two decades." (95 pts.)

Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.
