Alan Herrmann - Prestige Wine & Spirits April 19, 2016

"Brighter in color and in taste, this Cabernet leans more prominently toward rich, red fruit and allspice notes than dark berry and licorice notes. There is sufficient oak to bring out the vanilla notes that complement the tart cranberry and raspberry flavors."

Katherine Able - Premier Wine & Spirits August 22, 2018

"Opens with wonderfully fresh aromas of blackberry jam followed by delicate rose petal notes. This full-bodied wine, with firm tannins and oaky nuances, delivers blackberry and ripe plum flavors along with hints of dried sage, anise and vanilla. It is nicely structured, with a lengthy finish. Serve with a grilled marinated steak and baked butternut squash."

Where It's From

District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon has really closed down since I last tasted it. Beams of tannin give the 2013 its shape and overall energy. Precise and yet also quite explosive, the 2013 will be a magnificent wine once it emerges from its present slumber. Quite simply, this is a captivating wine from Naoko Dalla Valle. Time in the glass provides glimpse of what is in store for readers who wait. However, I imagine opening a bottle before age ten will be largely an academic exercise.

Dalla Valle’s 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is dark, dense and virtually impenetrable. Young and imposing, the 2013 is many years away from offering its finest drinking. The flavors are bold and dramatic in this super-classic eastern Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. Black cherry, plum, mocha, espresso, new leather and licorice wrap around a sumptuous finish supported by beams of acidity and minerality.

Pure and hyperfocused, with gorgeous violet, cassis and plum puree notes streaming along, laced with hints of apple wood, freshly plowed earth and iron. Long, sleek and refined through the finish, showing only hints of developing maturity, while the iron accent takes an encore. Circle back in another 10 years when this hits its peak. Blind 2013 California Cabernet retrospective (February 2023). Drink now through 2038. 1,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate displays loads of black fruit, cedar and wet stones along with some burning embers and charcoal, followed by wonderful ripeness and sweetness in a classic, full-bodied style. There’s a certain minerality, the tannins are prominent but velvety, and the wine multi-dimensional and layered. This wine will benefit from 5-7 years and last for at least 30+ years, based on how older vintages have evolved. This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2016
Tight, rich and juicy, with a solid core of zesty blackberry, anise, cedar, crushed rock and dusty herb flavors. A mouthful of Cabernet, showing a sense of elegance and finesse. Drink now through 2030. 1,000 cases made.

Another of the producer’s 100% varietal wines, this comes from two head-turning sites: Broken Rock Ranch at the foot of Atlas Peak, and Beckstoffer Las Piedras. The two marry well, offering sizable tannin and power atop complex layers of leather, cedar, pencil lead and coffee. Soft, integrated oak makes the wine enjoyable now, while its structure suggests further time in bottle, too. Drink now through 2021.
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, January 15, 2016
A red with a pretty density of ripe fruit and velvety tannins. Full body, solid tension and a flavorful finish. The finish is exciting. Drink now.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2015
The beautiful 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc) has a deep ruby/purple color and a sweet nose of spring flowers, blueberry and blackcurrant fruit. On the palate the wine is medium to full-bodied, pure, lush and impressive. This is a nice surprise from a winery I had not previously experienced. Drink it over the next 10–15 years.

RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015
Another perfect wine from Ann Colgin and her winemaking team is the 2013 IX Proprietary Red Estate, a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. An absolutely compelling wine, with notes of lead pencil shavings, spring flowers, blueberry, blackberry and cassis, it has the full smorgasbord of black and blue fruits, wonderfully integrated, toasty oak, acidity and tannin, a floral note that is unmistakable, and great richness, density and purity. It is an utterly exceptional wine and a tribute to not only a great vineyard, but impeccable winemaking and upbringing. It should drink well for 30+ years as well.
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2015
A magnificent, towering wine, the 2013 IX Estate, hits all the right notes. The interplay of opulent fruit, minerality, savory nuances and mountain tannin is utterly captivating. The most structured and backward of Colgin’s Cabernet Sauvignon-based 2013s, the IX Estate is going to need a few years to fully come together, but it is stratospheric, even today. Lavender, sage, mint and a host of mineral-inflected notes meld into the deeply satisfying finish. I can’t wait to see how this ages.
JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, January 15, 2016
The aromas to this are perfect with black truffle, sage, blueberry and wet earth. Changes all the time. Full body with lots of richness and fruit. The intensity is electric. Chewy tannins yet polished and silky. It lasts for minutes on the palate. A joy to taste (drink) now but it’s made for long-term aging.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2016
A powerful expression of rich, detailed, polished Cabernet, with layer upon layer of blackberry, licorice, kirsch, graphite and savory herb flavors. Impeccably balanced and nuanced, authoritative and refined in the same sip. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2019 through 2025. 1,880 cases made.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 21, 2023
This has an exotic edge, with a burst of chocolate-covered acai berry leading off, followed quickly by plum and blackberry puree flavors. Delivers a deeply buried cast iron note, but feels overall open and very friendly through the finish, with a kiss of sweet toast and a flash of Black Forest cake. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Blind 2013 California Cabernet retrospective (February 2023). Drink now through 2034. 1,880 cases made. (James Molesworth)

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Mar 2016
From their own estate, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Nathan Coombs Estate has a little Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in the blend. This is a beauty with loads of minerality, almost liquefied rock-like character, and plenty of spicy red and black currants moving toward blueberry and blackberry. It is rich, shows some licorice, a layered texture and a long, long finish. This is another 20 to 30-year wine, as are all of these 2013s.
