With its stunning, snowy mountains and beautiful beaches, Chile would be captivating even if it wasn’t turning out some of the most interesting and accessible wines in the world. But large producers like Concha y Toro and Casa LaPostolle have put Chile on the wine map with their complex yet value-driven Merlots and Cabernets, and lately smaller regions like Maipo, Casablanca, and the Bio Bio Valley have become more widely available.

Now, Syrah, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and even that elusive beast of the wine world--affordable Pinot Noir—have joined the ranks of Chile’s most famous offerings. And don’t forget Chile’s signature grape, Carmenere--a peppery, purpley beast that goes wonderfully with grilled meat dishes. Best of all, Chile offers some of the best value in the world, with many outstanding wines selling for under $12.

Pungent stony citrus aromas include a distinct whiff of passion fruit. This feels tight, crisp and elegant on the palate, while slightly salty citrus flavors suggest grapefruit and sea brine. A briny finish retains snap and freshness.

Aromas of cooked apples and pie crust and floral undertones make for a ripe nose. Full and soft on the palate with plenty of fleshy stone fruit, but the crunchy acidity carries this through to a driven finish. Drink now. Screw cap.

The first Chardonnay I tasted from Errázuriz, the 2017 Max Reserva Chardonnay has moderate alcohol and high acidity, produced in an austere, mineral and fresh style. It fermented in oak barrels, with some 30% of the volume going through malolactic, and then it matured in barriques for 11 months. I was really impressed by this wine, which set the pace for the style of the 2017s. It was a warm year, and they managed to take advantage of that to get their fruit to ripen early by controlling yields, and they think they really got the harvesting dates right. The wines are sharp and fresh, unlike the general character of the year. They didn’t have any influence from the terrible fires that decimated the country. In fact, in Aconcagua Costa 2016 was slightly warmer than 2017. This has the pure and fresh style they are getting famous for—crisp, with integrated oak, transparency, verticality and minerality on a vibrant and focused palate. Great Chardonnay at a great price. 150,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2018.

The currant and flower-leaf aromas are pungent here, yet they’re not overdone. Medium to full body and juicy fruit. Round tannins. Hints of walnuts. Firm yet very drinkable. Drink or hold.

Green notes of tobacco, eucalyptus and plum are edgy but typical of many Chilean Cabernets. On the palate, this feels full but cut by tomatoey acidity. Mild green flavors drive a competent finish.
