Critical Acclaim

RP97 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 24th Sep 2020

"At the risk of not being literal enough, tasting Isabel Ferrando’s 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Colombis is like drinking purple flowers. Deep rose and violet notes are seamlessly joined to purple raspberries in a full-bodied wine that seems almost weightless on the palate. There’s terrific inner-mouth perfume, near-ethereal tannins that support the wine’s girth via a taut, gossamer structure, and a finish tinged with star anise and black cherries that just won’t quit. A tour de force of pure Grenache, it should drink well for a decade, perhaps longer." (97 pts.)

RP95+ Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 30th Aug 2019

"Looking much suaver and more elegant than the recently bottled 2017, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Colombis features aromas and flavors of nearly crystalline-pure red berries, accented by hints of star anise, ground allspice and orange zest. Full-bodied and silky-textured, it’s a beauty in the making, with a fine bone structure supporting succulent, well-toned flesh." (95–97 pts.)

JD96+ Jeb Dunnuck August 16, 2019

"What could end up being the wine of the vintage, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Colombis is basically all Grenache brought up in demi-muids. It exhibits a deep purple color as well as a blockbuster bouquet of blackcurrants, smoked herbs, ground pepper, and cured meats. Deep, full-bodied, powerful, and tasting like the essence of Provence, it has sweet tannins, the rounded, sexy style of the vintage, and a finish that won’t quit. Love Grenache? Buy this wine." (96–99 pts.)

JD97 Jeb Dunnuck October 6, 2020

"Tasted from bottle, the 2018 Châteauneuf du Pape Colombis comes from a single lieu-dit and is 100% Grenache brought up all in demi-muids. I thought it could be the wine of the vintage last year, and it’s certainly not far off, offering a sensational bouquet of Provençal garrigue, ground pepper, spiced meat, and red and black fruits. Reminding me of a slightly toned-down version of the 2007, it’s full-bodied and has a beautifully layered, elegant texture, sweet tannins, and a gorgeous finish. The 2018s do not get much better than this, and this beauty can be drunk any time over the coming 15 years or more." (97 pts.)

SP95 Wine Spectator Oct 21, 2020

"This is a beauty, with a seductive display of Turkish coffee, singed alder, steeped plum and warmed anise aromas and flavors that move in unison, backed by a subtle garrigue note through the finish. A late echo of warm earth adds a finishing touch. Best from 2021 through 2037." (95 pts.)

Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.
