RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Apr 2017
Sporting a deep purple—almost blue—color, the sensational 2016 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde l’Esquerda has a northern Rhône-like minerality as well as notes of classic black and blue fruits, crushed flowers, ozone and licorice. Made from 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache, all from granitic soils, it’s a rich, structured, full-bodied and age-worthy red that will drink nicely through 2026. The quality of this release continues to soar and there are not many values like this out there today. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A savory, meaty red, with charred accents to the dried red berry and red plum fruit. Offers a mix of savory and sweet spice and olive flavors edged with grippy tannins lined up on the minerally finish. Decant. Drink now through 2021. 2,500 cases made, 800 cases imported. (Gillian Sciaretta)

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Slightly deeper colored, the 2016 Minervois La Livinière Amandiers might just be the finest vintage of this cuvée to date. Sensational notes of blackberries, scorched earth, wood smoke, and peppery garrigue all emerge from this full-bodied, deep, concentrated Syrah that has remarkable purity and elegance. It’s going to drink nicely right out of the gate yet evolve gracefully for 10–15 years. It should match or exceed the 2007, which is drinking brilliantly today. (Jeb Dunnuck)

From a 2.5-acre patch of biodynamically farmed old-vine syrah, this is tight and chewy, the concentrated fruit wrapped in the caramel notes of the new barrels that held it for 16 months. Give it hours of air to let those oaky notes turn floral and spicy, toward high-toned cedar scents that bring out the red side of the fruit. Time in the cellar, or a long decant, will let the structure relax and the fruit flow.

Open-knit, with good concentration to the blackberry reduction and crushed plum notes, accented by olive, mocha and black tea details. Fresh acidity binds all the elements through the finish, infused with dried herb, graphite and spice hints. Drink now through 2025. 50 cases made, 40 cases imported.

I tasted the Syrah-dominated 2016 Minervois la Liviniere les Amandiers twice during my trip, once at the estate and once at the CIVL. And on both occasions, I had some concerns about the level of oak (it’s aged in 100% new barriques from Radoux). There’s no doubting the quality of the blueberry-tinged fruit going into this cuvée, and there’s even some peppery spice for complexity. The tannins are ripe, the wine is creamy through the mid-palate and it shows good length on the finish. If all of the vanilla and cedar notes integrate over time, my rating could end up looking stingy, but I’d rather be conservative with a wine like this.
