Where It's From

District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Cimarossa Riva di Ponente Vineyard | Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 / 750 ml.

Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
2012 / 750 ml.

VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2014
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Rive di Ponente is one of the more imposing, dense wines in the range. Here the flavors are dark, bold and pungent, with blue/blackish overtones and tons of intensity. The Howell Mountain tannins are there, but they are nearly buried by the sheer voluptuousness of the fruit. This is the ripest and sweetest of the Cimarossa Cabernets, but there is no shortage of structure. These soils rich in white volcanic ash yield wines of real pedigree and personality.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Riva di Ponente looks terrific. A big blast of blue and black fruits soars from the glass of this opaque ruby/purple wine with notes of lead pencil shavings, chocolate, espresso, wet gravel and a boatload of blackcurrants and blackberries are all present in this nicely textured, rather sumptuous and full-bodied wine. It’s drinking beautifully now and should continue to do so for at least another 10–15 years.
