Wine Grapes

Primary Grape: Merlot | All Grapes: 80% Merlot

From the Producer

The wine has a deep color, very concentrated. On the nose, it develops generous aromas of black fruits, ripe and with a nice freshness. In the mouth, the wine reveals a beautiful tension, full-bodied, beautiful elegant tannins and great finesse. It is a racy wine, which expresses wonderfully the typicality of its clay-limestone soil.

Critical Acclaim

JD94+ Jeb Dunnuck May 1, 2019

"Deeply colored, the 2018 Château Villemaurine comes from a terrific terroir of light clay over limestone (the classic terroir of the upper plateau around the village of Saint-Émilion) and is an 80/20 split of Merlot and Cabernet Franc resting in 75% new French oak. Spicy oak, blackcurrants, incense, and sandalwood notes all emerge from this full-bodied yet elegant and beautifully balanced 2018. It has plenty of power but shines more for its elegant, seamless texture. It’s worth pointing out that Hubert de Boüard now consultants here, and this 2018 is a brilliant wine in the making. (Jeb Dunnuck)" (94–96 pts.)

RP93+ Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 23rd Apr 2019

"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Villemaurine rolls sensuously out of the glass with notes of plum preserves, blueberry pie and Black Forest cake with touches of underbrush, spice cake, star anise and unsmoked cigars plus a hint of potpourri. Full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with rich, seductive fruit, framed by plush tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and layered. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Aging is expected to be for 14 months in oak barriques, 75% new." (93–95 pts.)

JS95+ JamesSuckling.com Thursday, April 11, 2019

"This is really fantastic with density and richness and lots of minerality. Full-bodied, layered and extremely long. This has so much density and agility in the center palate. Better than 2015 and 2016?" (95–96 pts.)

WE91+ Wine Enthusiast 4/1/2019

"Firm tannins lie behind the attractive fruitiness of this ripe wine. It is a wine that is juicy and is likely to develop well." (91–93 pts.)

JS96 JamesSuckling.com Tuesday, February 2, 2021

"Polished aromas of currants, dried violets, dark chocolate and praline. Hints of cedar and sandalwood, too. It’s full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Tight, complex layers of fruit and bitter chocolate with some mineral undertones. Racy and so beautiful. Very fine. Serious. Try from 2025." (96 pts.)

Bordeaux

Bordeaux is known the world over for its exceptional wines, particularly red blends made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, among others. These Cabernets aren't typically the full-bodied Cabs you get from California, but rather medium-bodied wines that emanate elegance and sophistication.

You'll also find some refreshing Bordeaux whites and, of course, Bordeaux's famous dessert wine, Sauternes.

France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.
