Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Country / Italy

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

I’ve always said that Jan Hendrik Erbach is a maniac when it comes to the details. This wine is normally called “Vigneti del Versante,” with the Italian word for vineyards (“vigneti”) in plural because fruit comes from more than one site, but just this one time, the wine is called “Vigneto” (in the singular tense) because fruit was sourced from a single vineyard instead. The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto del Versante sees fruit sourced from the Scopeta vineyard (planted in 2003), and this single-vineyard expression offers spicy fruit with dark berries and plum. The wine shows great fiber and density, with much of that power coming from the heavier soils of the vineyard site. This is a beautiful expression from a difficult vintage. The wine will be released this autumn.

Bright red. Flint and rosemary nuances complement the red cherry and mineral aromas and flavors. Juicy and fresh, this medium-bodied Brunello showcases a refined mouthfeel and a typical cool-climate personality. A hint of sweet spices on the long finish is very typical of Sesta, where Pian dell’Orino’s Scopeta vineyard is located (in 2014, the Brunello Vigneti del Versante is a blend of grapes from the Scopeta and Bassolino di Sopra vineyards). Only 1,700 bottles made compared to 9,000 in very good vintages.

The 2014 Chianti Classico Vigneto San Marcellino is dark, sumptuous and super-expressive. Like all of the wines here, the 2014 San Marcellino needs at least a few years in bottle to truly show everything it has, but there is more than enough here to provide for engaging drinking for many years to come. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous scents of black cherry, plum, menthol, licorice and smoke. The 2014 is a striking, complete wine.

Blackberries, black cherries and a hint of earth on the nose. Full body. Chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Tangy acidity at the end. Needs time to soften, but I like the brightness from the acidity. Nicely done for the vintage. Drink or hold.

The nose is crisp yet textured, with tart notes of lemon and yellow apple pushing back against savory aromas of rubber and herbs. The fruit elements swell on the palate, but an emergent, salty nuttiness preserves that layered feeling. (Danielle Callegari)

There is a graphite edge to this light-bodied white, along with white peach and apple flavors. Ends in an earthy note. Drink now. 10,000 cases made, 3,600 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

An intense red, with blackberry, black currant, wet hay, leather, earth and iron aromas and flavors piercing the athletic structure. Almost delicate, with a dense matrix of tannins for support. Features fine energy and length. Best from 2026 through 2047. 1,100 cases made, 213 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, December 11, 2022
Cranberries, crushed raspberries, bark, tobacco leaf, hazelnuts and lemons on the nose. Expressive, fresh and savory on the palate, with bright acidity and tight, firm tannins. I like the tangy energy at the end. Try in 2024. (James Suckling)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Mar 2023
Now in its proverbial third leaf (or the third vintage made), the Castello Banfi 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Marrucheto is a wine of rich concentration and dark fruit nuances. The bouquet is tight and powerful with all kinds of black cherry and wild currant aromas. The balance is good and so is the intensity of the primary fruit. Only the strong 15% alcohol content is out of place. This is a solid Brunello that will appeal to those who love the richer and more saturated side of Sangiovese. There is some sour cherry on the close, and the tannins would benefit from a few more years in the bottle. Production is exactly 13,325 bottles. (Monica Larner)
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/6/2023
Moving to a more serious and grounding wine, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino Vigna Marrucheto is ripe with balsamic, toasted herbs, sassafras, and black cherry. It is full without being heavy and has meaty cherry black and plum pit, as well as toasted cedar and forest floor. This is another firmly structured wine with more tannin than acid lift. Drink 2025–2032. (Audrey Frick)

Aromas of currants and blackberries and hints of mushrooms follow through to a medium body with plenty of fruit, fine tannins and a fresh, fruity finish. Drink after 2022, but already a beauty.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2020
This red starts out accessible, packed with ripe plum, cherry, iron and earth flavors accented by oak spice, before dense tannins firm up the finish. Though finely balanced, elegant and fresh, this will take a few years to integrate all its elements. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2021 through 2032. 2,000 cases imported.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2020
This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc opens with aromas of dark-skinned berry, leather and a whiff of mocha. The juicy, balanced palate delivers blackberry jam, star anise and tobacco alongside fine-grained tannins. Drink through 2024.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Dec 2020
In developing their new Bolgheri project, the team at Banfi decided to focus on Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, blended here 90% to 10%, respectively. Their 2017 Bolgheri Rosso Aska shows richness and generous fruit for sure, but the wine is more streamlined and subdued next to many of the much riper wines made by its peers in this hot and dry vintage. This wine has captured the concentration and spicy nature of the vintage, but it does so without feeling heavy or jammy. There’s good balance in the mouth as well, with well managed tannin. Production is an ample 82,000 bottles.

A very pretty Bolgheri red with currant, chocolate and hazelnut aromas and flavors. It’s full and layered with firmness and freshness. Tight at the end, with a lovely texture and finesse to the tannins. Drink or hold.

Pouring a deep ruby color, the 2021 Chianti Classico is aromatic of fresh cedar, ripe red cherry, dusty earth, and dried red flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it is mouthwatering with savory herbs up front, followed by tangy acidity, dusty tannins, and a lingering bit of smoky incense on the finish with oak spices. It’s a solid offering to enjoy over the near term and would be ideal for pizza nights. Drink 2024–2026. (Audrey Frick)

Deep character of ripe purple fruit with sweet spices, violets and chocolate notes. Full-bodied, succulent and mellow with creamy tannins and velvety texture. Fruity and lingering. Sustainable. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

The nose is earthy, vegetal and stony, with undercurrents of both sweetness and spice becoming more powerful with time. The earthiness persists on the palate, but takes a backseat to an emergent, tart florality. Waves of acid wash against austere tannins. (Danielle Callegari)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2024
Broad and rich, offering plum, blackberry and leather flavors, with a leafy underbrush note.
