This sleek red displays cherry, raspberry and spice flavors, with vibrant acidity and light tannins for support. Fine length. Drink now. 9,000 cases made.

The 2014 Chianti Classico is being released now. Grapes are fermented with ambient yeasts partially in stainless steel and in barrel. The wine is then put in cement for up to eight months to rest and lock in its fruity freshness. This is a successful expression with an easy but very clean and lean approach. Fruit is sourced from various sites on the property. The bouquet shows bright berry tones and the mouthfeel is silky and supple.
WE8787 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 6/1/2016
This sleek, easy-drinking red offers aromas of red berry, violet and moist soil. The straightforward palate doles out juicy black cherry and a hint of baking spice alongside limber tannins and bright acidity. Drink through 2016.

Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

I’ve always said that Jan Hendrik Erbach is a maniac when it comes to the details. This wine is normally called “Vigneti del Versante,” with the Italian word for vineyards (“vigneti”) in plural because fruit comes from more than one site, but just this one time, the wine is called “Vigneto” (in the singular tense) because fruit was sourced from a single vineyard instead. The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto del Versante sees fruit sourced from the Scopeta vineyard (planted in 2003), and this single-vineyard expression offers spicy fruit with dark berries and plum. The wine shows great fiber and density, with much of that power coming from the heavier soils of the vineyard site. This is a beautiful expression from a difficult vintage. The wine will be released this autumn.

Bright red. Flint and rosemary nuances complement the red cherry and mineral aromas and flavors. Juicy and fresh, this medium-bodied Brunello showcases a refined mouthfeel and a typical cool-climate personality. A hint of sweet spices on the long finish is very typical of Sesta, where Pian dell’Orino’s Scopeta vineyard is located (in 2014, the Brunello Vigneti del Versante is a blend of grapes from the Scopeta and Bassolino di Sopra vineyards). Only 1,700 bottles made compared to 9,000 in very good vintages.

The 2014 Chianti Classico Vigneto San Marcellino is dark, sumptuous and super-expressive. Like all of the wines here, the 2014 San Marcellino needs at least a few years in bottle to truly show everything it has, but there is more than enough here to provide for engaging drinking for many years to come. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous scents of black cherry, plum, menthol, licorice and smoke. The 2014 is a striking, complete wine.

Blackberries, black cherries and a hint of earth on the nose. Full body. Chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Tangy acidity at the end. Needs time to soften, but I like the brightness from the acidity. Nicely done for the vintage. Drink or hold.

The Poggio Ai Merli is Castellare’s single-vineyard Merlot. For whatever reason, it is not a wine I taste all that often, but I should, as the 2007 is a stunner. Dark cherries, scorched earth, smoke, licorice and leather are some of the aromas and flavors that burst from the glass in this huge, explosive wine. This is far from an easygoing, open 2007. Rather it is a wine that reconciles the opulence of the year with tons of underlying structure to the extent rarely seen in this vintage. The French oak (33% new) adds volume and depth, but without marking the wine at all. The 2007 Poggio ai Merli will be a jewel of a wine once the tannins start melting away. Anticipated maturity: 2017–2027.

Saturated ruby. Wild aromas of blackberry, black cherry, pepper, truffle and minerals. Wonderfully dense and concentrated, with compelling black fruit and spice flavors that show a refined quality at the back. Finishes supple, with outstanding length and brightness. A very strong vintage for this merlot, from a hot year that might have led one to expect grittier tannins. Very well done.
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2010
Here’s a lively Tuscan Merlot with soft layers of spice and cola lavished over a solid core of black fruit. The aromas are pristine and focused and the wine makes an equally excellent impression in the mouth thanks to its soft, yielding tannins and sweet cherry flavors.

Violets and berries, with hints of green leaves and blackberry on the nose. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a medium finish. Not giving much right now. Needs time to open. Best after 2011. 450 cases made.
