Where It's From
Region / Tuscany
There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.
Country / Italy
Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.
Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

2020 / 750 ml.
Attractive aromas of ripe cherries, dried strawberries, dried orange peel, spices and crushed stones, following through to a medium to full body with compact tannins that are firm and finely grained. Smooth and textured with vivid fruit underneath and a lingering finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
In the bottle with the black label, the organic 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva offers ripe fruit with measured intensity that never feels heavy or overdone. Achieving this level of balance is not easy in a hot growing season such as this. This wine is characterized by an especially linear and direct personality that pushes it over the palate with good momentum. An ambitious 60,000 bottles were released. (Monica Larner)
A juicy yet firmly structured red highlighted by bright cherry and blackberry fruit. Reveals dense tannins that inform the finish, where accents of earth and mineral linger. Balanced in a youthful, exuberant way. Best from 2025 through 2039. 5,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

An elegant and enticing red, this features cherry, strawberry and floral aromas and flavors accented by earth and rhubarb. Firm and lightly astringent on the finish—but food will resolve that. Best from 2023 through 2028. 35,000 cases made, 5,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Made with a special selection of Sangiovese, the 2020 Fontalloro is generous and rich, and the wine sports medium-dark color and concentration. The winemaking team has succeeded in bringing out an especially elegant side to this vintage. The wine offers pronounced notes of cherry and wild plum with delicate spice at the back. Like the other wines in this portfolio, there is a pretty mineral note that makes for a consistent through-line in all these new releases. (Monica Larner)
A vibrant red, with fleeting aromas of lavender and wild rosemary mingling with cherry, orange peel, earth, mineral and tobacco flavors. On the elegant side, despite its youthful power, with excellent harmony, refined tannins and a long, complex aftertaste. Sangiovese. Best from 2026 through 2045. 3,800 cases made, 1,200 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
Very refined and complex nose with a hint of pine cones, botanicals and dark mushrooms to the zesty oranges, mineral, fine musk and plums. Juicy, dry but textured on the palate with stacks of dusty tannins growing on the savory, full-bodied palate. Long and quite mineral in the finish. Better from 2025. (Zekun Shuai)

The nose is floral and sweet, but refreshing thanks to clean, balancing aromas of mint and dirt. The palate takes that freshness a step further, to a light, bouncy, almost astringent level. Precocious tannins are young yet dense and supportive, while jubilant acid sings. (Danielle Callegari)
Released in June 2023, the medium red 2020 Rosso Di Montalcino is open aromatically already at this stage, revealing notes of ripe red cherries along with a very pretty floral perfume of fresh flowers and wild fresh herbs. Medium-bodied and rounded, with a very elegant feel, sweet, fine tannins, and a pleasing fresh ripeness, it’s a lovely wine with a lot of charm now. It has very clean fruit aromas and profile, with an open feel and a lovely sanguine mineral tone of the finish. This is going to be a Rosso with a wide window of drinking over the coming 8–10 years. (Audrey Frick)
Generous aromas of ripe strawberries and cherries, turning to flowers and stones with some crushed cement. Medium body with firm tannins that fill the mouth, as well as lively acidity and depth of fruit. Savory and almost salty at the end. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino is simply stunning, lifting from the glass with vivid raspberry and cherry notes complemented by sweet rose, clove and cedar. This model of purity is silky and refined, with a dusty feel to its ripe red berry fruits. Orange notes adds contrast toward the close. It finishes structured and long, still remarkably pure, with a slightly bitter tinge that slowly fades. This fabulous Rosso from Biondi-Santi shows the work done over the past years. (Eric Guido)
Displays cherry, strawberry, floral and black pepper flavors. Though on the elegant side, this bright, juicy red offers firm tannins and a peppery finish. Drink now. 1,959 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione
2020 / 750 ml.
The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Ama San Lorenzo is fabulous. It offers up a compelling mix of blackberry, graphite, crushed rocks, spice, lavender and black pepper, showing striking inner sweetness, gorgeous mid-palate pliancy and mind-blowing balance, all in a medium-bodied style that will be approachable with minimal cellaring. San Lorenzo remains an archetype for contemporary Chianti Classico. Production is down about 30% in 2020 because of stringent selection. (Antonio Galloni)

Violets and lavender with dark fruit and hints of dark chocolate. Sophisticated nose. Medium-bodied with fine tannin structure that gives this finesse and beauty. It’s very long and goes on for minutes. Precision. 68% sangiovese with the rest in cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. Drinkable but better in three or four years. (James Suckling)
The 2020 Tignanello is so primary, so intensely fruit-driven, that it almost tastes like a barrel sample. A burst of red Sangiovese fruit opens first, followed by hints of blood orange, cinnamon, spice, dried flowers and mocha later. Time in the glass brings out striking dimension. In 2020, Tignanello is wonderfully sleek and racy, with fine tannins that lie below a core of bright, sculpted fruit. The balance here is just sublime. I can’t wait to revisit the 2020 with age. (Antonio Galloni)
Newly on the market now, the 2020 Tignanello shows a gorgeous bouquet with an upfront and accessible personality. Right off the bat, you get dark cherry, dried raspberry, spice, toasted almond and citrusy blood orange. The blend is normally 75% to 80% Sangiovese with 7% Cabernet Franc. The grape in between, making up 13% to 18%, is Cabernet Sauvignon. This vintage is very pretty and won’t require a long wait. The tannins are sweet and silky. “Tignanello proves itself as a great vineyard site in both the challenging and the classic years,” says Managing Director Renzo Cotarella. Annual production falls between 300,000-350,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)
A concentrated red, with black cherry, blackberry, iron, tobacco and vanilla flavors framed by sweet spices and toast accents. Ends with mouthcoating tannins, yet is pretty well-balanced overall. Alluring and classy. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2045. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2020 Chianti Classico is a dark, voluptuous red. Black cherry, plum, licorice and spice are all amplified in this potent, racy wine. Readers will find a super-classic Panzano Chiarti Classico built on texture and volume. Expressive floral and spice notes resonate on the rich, potent finish. A dollop of 10% Merlot works well in exalting richness. This is beautifully done. (Antonio Galloni)
Black cherry, black currant, violet and earth aromas and flavors mark this velvety red, which is harmonious, yet still boasts a line of dusty tannins and a compact finish. Sangiovese and Merlot. Drink now through 2033. 2,250 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
