halloween party

Halloween is a night of candies and costumes for kids, but those of us long since retired from trick-or-treating also have a lot to look forward to. Before Halloween got its current name, it was called Samhain, the Celtic festival marking the beginning of winter. Wine played a key role in the festivities, as it should today.  You can, of course, choose your favorite bottles from our vast selection of red, white, and rosé wines. But we’ve put together this collection of particularly spooky wines to inspire you whether you’re planning a Halloween party or looking forward to a quiet night in with a great bottle.

Our Top 5 Halloween Wines

The Walking Dead Cabernet Sauvignon

First on our list of wines for Halloween is a beautiful Californian Cabernet Sauvignon. The Walking Dead Cabernet Sauvignon is a blood-red Cab and the perfect drink for your zombie friends, especially if they’re fond of a bold, full-bodied red that combines blackberry with notes of dark cherry, mocha, and spice flavors.

7 Deadly Zins

We’re sticking with California for our next Halloween wine. 7 Deadly Zins is, as you might have guessed, a dark, rich Zinfandel with black-fruit flavors and chocolate and wood-smoke notes.  7 Deadly Zins is the product of Lodi wine country in California’s central valley, home to some of the finest Zinfandel vines in the U.S., including many of the oldest in California. As an old vine Zinfandel, it’s possible the vines that nurtured 7 Deadly Zins are older than the oldest of the undead attending your Halloween party,

Phantom Red Blend

Phantom Red Blend is an award-winning blend of Petite Sirah and Zinfandel selected from the best vineyards in California. This spectral blend is aged in American oak barrels for at least 19 months, resulting in intense flavors and aromas that include wild berries, black pepper, baking spices, and a wraith-like hint of vanilla. Phantom Red Blend will surely be a hit with your more phantasmagorical party guests.

Ghost Pines Winemaker’s Blend Cabernet Sauvignon

Ghost Pines Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of the best grapes sourced from California’s pre-eminent viticulture regions, Napa, Sonoma, and Lake County.  Blending allows the winemakers to choose the best grapes from each region and to modify the wine’s flavor’s with the addition of other varietals, in this case, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The resulting wine is a rich and intense combination of blackberry, blackcurrant, and cherry with notes of oak, vanilla, and toasted nuts.

Ghostrunner Ungrafted Red

Ghostrunner Ungrafted Red is a dark and complex blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and Ruby Cabernet. The result is a rich, dark Halloween wine suffused with the flavors of blackberries and cherries with notes of pepper and spice.  This ghostly red offers a finish that includes soft tannins and elaborate oaks, making it the perfect accompaniment for your Halloween feast or for sipping with friends late into the night.

Our Favorite Way to Serve Wine at a Halloween Party

It goes without saying that you can drink all of our Halloween wines as they come. We recommend chilling red wines slightly. Cabernet Sauvignon and other heavier reds do well between 60°F and 65°F—around 45 minutes in a domestic fridge. Lighter reds flourish a few degrees cooler at 55°F and 60°F.

If you’re looking for something more adventurous, spiced mulled wine is an excellent choice for a cold Halloween night. Warm your Halloween wine with:

  • 1 orange and 1 lemon, washed and sliced
  • 2 tsp. of ground ginger
  • 1 tsp. of nutmeg
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 cloves
  • sugar or honey to taste

For an added kick, pour in a cup or so of brandy.

Finally, if mulled wine isn’t your thing, try a blood-red Halloween Sangria. Mix a couple of bottles of wine in a jug with grapes, oranges, or your choice of fruit. Add a quarter cup of sugar and some ice. Leave the mixture to chill overnight, and add ginger ale and creepy candies just before your guests arrive.
