Critical Acclaim

ST91+ Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar May/Jun 2004

"Medium ruby. Knockout nose combines blackberry, minerals, violet, graphite and licorice, along with a distinctly rocky quality. Rich and quite purple in flavor, hinting at blackberry and violet pastille; very backward and evolving slowly. Extremely tactile, even saline, and not at all an overly sweet style of syrah. Finishes with powerful tannins and sneaky length. Still an infant, but a fascinating sample. Behrens uses mostly 350- and 500-liter barrels to age this wine." (91–94 pts.)

RP93 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 1st Feb 2005

"The inky/blue/purple-tinged 2002 Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard Homage to Ed Olivera reveals aromas and flavors of blackberries, blueberries, creosote, and acacia flowers. Heady, full-bodied, and viscous, with tremendous opulence as well as fleshy fruit, this mind-blowing Syrah may be even better than my numerical rating suggests. Already showy, I would opt for drinking it over the next 5–7 years." (93 pts.)

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.
