JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/11/2022
The second wine of this terrific estate located on the southern edge of Saint-Julien, the 2019 Amiral De Beychevelle sports a dense purple hue to go with ripe black (and some blue) fruits, notes of tobacco leaf, cedar, and damp earth, medium-bodied richness, and a plush, round, sexy mouthfeel. It’s beautifully balanced and well worth drinking. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2022
Shows a flash of mesquite out front, followed quickly by blackberry and black currant preserve flavors. Features sanguine and iron notes that peek through on the grippy finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2032. (James Molesworth)

Where It's From

Region / Bordeaux

View more wines from Bordeaux

Bordeaux is known the world over for its exceptional wines, particularly red blends made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, among others. These Cabernets aren't typically the full-bodied Cabs you get from California, but rather medium-bodied wines that emanate elegance and sophistication.

You'll also find some refreshing Bordeaux whites and, of course, Bordeaux's famous dessert wine, Sauternes.

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

A fresh, fruity Bordeaux with no added sulfur. Medium body, light tannins and a fruity and lightly cream-textured finish. Drink now.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021
Bottled without added sulfur, this wine is young, solid with tannins and layers of black fruits. It is a complex wine with its solid texture, spice and rich black-currant flavors. It is sure to age well, ready to drink from 2023.

A very spicy and typical St.-Estephe with nutmeg, clove and berry character. Medium body with slightly chewy tannins and a savory finish. Give it time to soften. Serious second wine from Phelan. Try after 2025. (James Suckling)
JD89+89–91 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 6/11/2020
The second wine of Phelan Segur, the 2019 Frank Phelan is a solid effort, and I continue to think these second wines are undervalued in the market today. Deep purple, with impressive notes of cassis, black cherries, unsmoked tobacco, cedarwood, and chocolate, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, rock-solid balance, and a charming, thoroughly enjoyable style. It’s well worth purchasing. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Deep purple-black colored, the 2019 Frank Phélan jumps from the glass with punchy black cherries, boysenberries and plum preserves scents with a core of warm cassis, candied violets, dark chocolate and garrigue. Medium-bodied, the palate has a classic sturdy/chewy structure with seamless freshness supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing earthy. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

The second wine of this terrific estate, which has been playing with the stars of the appellation for several years now, the 2020 Amiral De Beychevelle checks in as 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. It gives up a rich, juicy nose of ripe red and blue fruits, spring flowers, Christmas spice, and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, it’s nicely textured, has velvety tannins, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. I don’t think it’s one of the top second wines out there, but it’s still certainly an outstanding wine I’d be happy to have on the table. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Aromas and flavors of currants and ash with some tobacco. It’s medium-bodied with round tannins and a savory finish. Second wine of Beychevelle. (James Suckling)

A rock star of a second wine already offering pleasure, the 2018 Amiral De Beychevelle checks in as 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that comes from the younger vines of the estate and slightly more sandy soils. This makes for a more up-front, fruit-driven wine that reveals a deep purple hue as well as sumptuous array of blueberries, black cherries, lead pencil shavings, tobacco, and spring flowers. It’s classic Bordeaux on the nose, yet has a wonderful sweetness of fruit, ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and just a balanced, seamless style that’s ideal for enjoying over the coming 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Dark fruit with cedar and herbal notes on the nose. Some meat, too. It’s full-bodied with firm tannins. Juicy and savory character on the palate with a balanced structure. Flavorful finish. Second wine. Try after 2023 when it will be more together.
SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jan 28, 2021
Juicy, with a solid core of red currant and damson plum notes laced liberally with savory and iron details. A sleek, focused finish lets the mineral edge win out, eventually. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2030. (James Molesworth)

WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2019
The second wine of Château Beychevelle, this is richly structured and packed with tannins and opulent black fruits. Smoky with the wood aging, this ripe wine will age well. The youthful potential suggests it will not be ready before 2023.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Mar 2019
Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Amiral de Beychevelle offers up compelling red and black cherry scents with a core of blackcurrants and blackberries plus wafts of lavender, wild sage and cumin seed. Medium-bodied with a firm, chewy frame, it has lovely freshness and purity, finishing on a mineral note.
