Mauro Molino bought this vineyard in the 1990s, but the first vintage was not produced from it until 2001. The first of the single vineyard wines, the 2019 Barolo Gallinotto is lifted with mineral, fresh mint, and tarragon and has a floral imprint of wet stone, red cherry, and cinnamon. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied but takes on crunchy fresh acidity, with fine though present tannins, and has a cooling effect throughout. The palate reveals notes of anise, mint, and pomegranate. Allow for another year in bottle and drink 2024–2040. (Audrey Frick)

Another celestial effort from Paul Pontallier and Corinne Mentzelopoulus, the 2005 Margaux, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, boasts a dense opaque blue/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of spring flowers, blueberries, black raspberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and, despite its having spent two years in 100% new wood, only a subtle touch of toasty oak. Although full-bodied, the wine seems light on its feet because of the silky tannins as well as the great gravel terroir from which it comes. Beautiful purity, length, and nobility define this modern day classic. Is it better than the 2000, 1996, 1990, or some of the vintages from the decade of the eighties? Who knows, but it is unquestionably one of the all-time great wines made at Chateau Margaux. This estate has produced only exceptional wines over the last three decades. The seamlessness of the 2005 suggests it will perform well early, but it should last for a half century or more. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2050+.

The NV First Estate Reserve Ruby Porto is a blend of typical Douro grapes from Cima Corgo held for four years in used French oak. It comes in with 93 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is produced “to commemorate the firm’s acquisition in 1744 of its first property in the upper Douro Valley, the Casa dos Alambiques at Lugar das Lages.” It’s pretty tight on opening even though it was from a March 2017 bottling (although unless you can read production stamps, that isn’t so easy to determine). Big, dry and rather powerful, this is rather intense on the finish. It shows both classic flavor and fine structure. It is a bit straightforward, though, tending to make its way with power more than any expression of fruit. Still, with its very reasonable price point, this is certainly a good bargain, seeming very much in the “vintage character” style.

The red 2020 Malbec Clásico was produced with 80% grapes from Luján de Cuyo and 20% grapes from Valle de Uco, mostly their own grapes, all in stainless steel and vinified by plot with their native yeasts. It matured in concrete for nine months. It’s ripe without excess and develops a full array of aromas and flavors but keeping 13.5% alcohol, very fresh for the warm year. It’s juicy, complex beyond fruit, a little herbal, medium-bodied and with very fine tannins. It’s clean, expressive and open, a wine that has to be approachable from when you pull the cork. They are working to increase the drinkability, which will be seen more and more in the following years. This represents the largest part of their production with some 500,000 bottles. Tasting the 2022 Crios Malbec next to the new organic one, it was easy to see how this wine from the Valle de Uco (from Los Chacayes, Vista Flores, Los Árboles and Gualtallary Sur) is subtler and has a different point of balance despite having very similar parameters. Here, 40% of the volume spends eight months in used French oak barrels, but there is no aromatic influence of the élevage. It’s fresh, balanced and juicy but with a little more austerity and fine-grained tannins. Clean, approachable and tasty. 720,000 bottles produced represents a huge chunk of the total production of the winery. (Luis Gutiérrez)

It’s easily the friendliest of the regular Rieslings from the winery this year (including the Dry and Semi-Dry), showing a touch of sugar around the edges to go with a fresh demeanor. This is a nice performance at this level for this vintage. It might be a step short of distinguished, but in the price category, there is plenty of bang for the buck.
