Initial sniffs find fruit, lanolin and vanilla bean aromas; later sniffs encounter dry grain, breakfast cereal, trail mix and dried yellow fruit. Palate entry is wonderfully oily, concentrated, off-dry and grainy; midpalate is focused on delicious tastes of rye bread, sesame seed, sesame oil, peanut oil and unsalted butter. Ends creamy, robust and elegant.

Silky, smooth and syrupy, with a lightness that would lend itself to a Sazerac. Light tawny golden color, scent of vanilla, oranges and, faintly, peaches. Caramel flavors wind up into a pleasantly warm and smooth finish.

The warm and fruity scent is reminiscent of fresh apples drizzled with caramel. On the palate, spicy cinnamon leads, softening to caramel midpalate and finishing with sizzling cinnamon, clove and cayenne pepper. Adjusted with water, a saline note emerges, creating a pleasing salted caramel-like sipper.

: February, 2014 5/5 stars

It is definitely better than some other “six-year” ryes I’ve had — it is a very rich whiskey for having only the six-year age statement. The nose has delicious aromas of honey, dried figs and star anise. The palate is much earthier though: tobacco and leather, with hints of peanut and figs. Jimmy Russell knows how to make a good rye and this whiskey is a fine example of a rich and complex one — for not a ton of money either.
