The initial bouquet offers scents of buttered toast and almond paste; further aeration stimulates exotic scents of dried fruit, black pepper and white chocolate. Palate entry is viscous, malty and sweet; mid-palate adds flavors of sweet oak, marzipan, vanilla cake frosting, spice and baked pears. Concludes as elegantly and gracefully as it began. One of the three or four best blended Scotch whiskeys available.

Medium gold in color. The nose is immediately heathery and honeyed, then some fruits — ripe oranges — come into play along with a wonderful camphor-like aroma and a dash of peat. The body is big and lush, and the palate, spicy and peppery at first, bears a complex multitude of flavors: smoldering wood. overripe fruits, old, supple leather, fresh ginger and a very pleasant mossy/earthy backdrop. The finish is nicely spiced and lasts a very long time.

This amber blend of 15 whiskies, each aged at least 18 years, yields a mellow, balanced mix of sweet caramel, raisin and smoky notes, all lingering and pleasing. Serve chilled, possibly as a dessert pairing.

Light amber orange color. The malty bouquet emits mature, evolved scents of cocoa, buttered nuts, soft fruit and paraffin. The oily mouth presence is exceptionally velvety at entry; at midpalate, sweet, estery flavors of ripe pears, grain mash and oak enchant the taste buds. Aftertaste is peppery and candied. What makes this whisky so sublime is the backbone malt whisky from the Clynelish Distillery. The finest Johnnie Walker in the marketplace.

An example that older, more expensive isn’t always better, this 18 year old gem is as good as many blends twice its price. The foundation of Johnnie Walker Gold is delicate, clean, and honeyed, along with a fresh sea character (from Clynelish?) that provides a youthful zing. Notes of vanilla, shortbread, tropical fruit, freshly cut hay, marshmallows, and even a hit of peat, round out the palate. Its finish is subtly complex and nicely balanced. The blend has improved nicely over the past several years.

My pet blended Scotch; it never ceases to amaze and thrill me. When single malt snobs accost me with their holier-than-thou claptrap about the inferiority of blends, I treat them to a dram of this elegant elixir and watch their eyes grow to the size of turkey platters. Shows what a great blender can do when given the tools.

What can I say other than I love this supple, fully integrated whiskey blend because it displays its Highlands’ malt core from start to finish. Most importantly, its age is at the sweet spot for Scotch whisky. JW Gold is that rare constructed whisky in which its innate power is in ideal harmony with its elegance. The equal measures of strength and grace never cease to astound and impress me at a primal level of enjoyment. Yet another SJHoF candidate. The ideal antidote to single malt snobs.

The warm welcome, pure appearance is of honey and golden harvested wheat — a feast for the eyes; the aroma off the mark offers nuances of buttered toast and almond paste — seven more minutes stimulate deeper, more exotic scents, including dried fruit, black pepper and white chocolate; the palate entry is viscous, malty, mashy and sweet — at mid palate, the taste profile adds flavors of sweet oak, marzipan, vanilla, cake frosting, spice and baked pears; concludes as elegantly and gracefully as it begins; the Clynelish core is what makes this blend so special.

Medium amber in color with full aromas and flavors of caramel, leather, dried apple and pear, and hints of peat smoke. Concentrated, rich, and refined with a robust finish.
