A clean, refreshing, coastal red, this is a blend from five vineyards, whole berry fermented without stems and aged in mostly older oak. It has the high-toned spice of crushed green and black peppercorns, a scent that lifts the wine and plays against the lithe red fruit. It’s firm and to the point, with nothing sweet or thick about it. For a grilled heritage pork chop.

The 2009 Syrah is a gorgeous entry-level wine loaded with blackberries, blueberries, licorice and herbs. It shows lovely depth and roundness to match some of its more powerful tendencies. A few barrels of Petite Sirah add layers of muscle, yet this remains an exceptionally polished wine at its level, not to mention a fabulous value. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2020.

Supple and harmonious, delivering a pleasing mix of berry, spice, cedar and mineral flavors. Full-bodied, fleshy and layered, this is complete and approachable, yet sure to gain. Drink now through 2018.

A good everyday Syrah. It doesn’t show the richness of the single-vineyard bottlings, but it’s nice and dry, with berry, cherry, grilled meat, pepper and oak flavors.
