At first, this whiskey is easy to underestimate, since the amber color and mild toffee aroma give little away. But one sip, and it is clear this whiskey means business: Deep vanilla cookie and cigar tobacco flavors unfold to a big, burnt-caramel finish, which washes over the palate like a rolling wave. Manhattan-worthy.

: July 1, 1997

Bright aromas of citrus, orange zest, spice, caramel and cedar in the nose. Spicy notes of briar and cedar palate, with huge extract and slight caramel notes of some complexity. Intense and flavorful, with good extract and slightly hot finish, it is terrific.

Was slated to have reached national distribution last month, February 1997; gorgeous, new copper penny color that plays with light; the corn component is so distinct in the nose that I find myself reaching for butter and cob tongs — there’s no shortage of piquant spirit (94 proof), especially after 3–4 minutes of aeration — in the fourth and final nosing an ashy/phenolic aromatic turn works against the opening graininess; the palate entry is a genuine delight as grainy, woody, resiny, semisweet, and oily tastes welcome the taste buds — the midpalate expands those themes with the introduction of passing-gear spirit which nips at the back to the tongue; mildly biting finish; unique, idiosyncratic, but not better than my favorite whisky from JD, the four-star, highly recommended Gentleman Jack.

: November, 2006

Full bodied, complex, and robust with aromas and flavors of toasted oak, caramel, and vanilla, plus background notes of allspice and spearmint; maple sugar finish with licorice.
