Apple-citrus aromas, light as a breeze, lead into the clear, bright flavors of this Cava. It’s full of tangerine and lemon pith character, with a sparkly acidity and dry vivaciousness made to accopmpany shellfish.

Perfumed scents of Asian pear and acacia fill this simple Cava, its waxy texture and muscular structure a match for tapas, like a classic Spanish tortilla.

88 pts. : December 15, 2006

Keeps the Cordon Negro reputation healthy by delivering easygoing lemon-lime aromas and round citrus and apple floors. As correct as one can ask for, this large-production cava features pure-fruit character and a perfectly good mouthfeel. For the money, we give it the proverbial high-five.

This is your quintessential simple quaff among brut cavas. It’s clean, lime-tinged and soda-like on the nose, with a correct, no-issues palate that pushes zesty apple along with sweet papaya, mango and banana flavors. It’s slightly sweet and tropical, but still it holds onto its crisp qualities and dryness. No complaints for the money.

This shows more finesse than many of its peers, displaying a subtle juiciness, joined by aromatic apricot, quince, mandarin orange and almond notes. Finely meshed with a lightly spiced finish. Drink now.

87 pts. : December 15, 2008

Not overly fruity up front; instead there’s a strong hint of lettuce, greens and peach pit on the bouquet. The palate is more round and giving, with a tropical blend of pineapple, citrus and apple flavors. Finishes dry and firm, making it perfectly good in the $12-and-under category.

Pale green straw. Medium-bodied. Balanced acidity. Mildly floral aromas. Juicy, appealing, simple flavors have an apple-like/lemon cream note. The mouthfeel shows a degree of creamy richness.

86 pts.: August 1, 2014

Bold and juicy passion fruit scents combine with the flinty, rubber-meets-the-road reduction character typical of Cava. This is rich and round, finishing clean. Chill it for grilled calamares and other tapas.

86 pts. : December 31, 2002

This mass-market Cava is smooth and tight, with no one thing really standing out. The palate is light and crisp, with melon and green apple. The finish is seriously dry, but some sweetness does rise up. Defined and solid; a mainstream Cava for certain.

86 pts. : November 29, 2004

Light and dry, with aromas of talcum powder, lime, tarragon and mineral. Virtually no yeast or bread notes, but lots of spiced apple and green melon on the firm, fresh palate. A mainstream wine with a pleasant overall attitude.

The lineup begins with the Non-Vintage Cordon Negro made from the three traditional grape varieties of the Cava DO (Xarel-lo, Macabeu, and Parellada) with the emphasis on the latter for this bottling. It is made in a tasty, friendly style with a dosage of 9 grams making it just off-dry on the palate. It is a cleanly made sparkling wine that can be found in discount stores at well under the suggested retail price.

The vanilla, cream and apple flavors show intensity in this richly textured sparkler. It has more depth than many cavas, yet remains fresh and fruity, with a slightly sweet finish. Drink now.

85 pts.: 12/15/2011

Cidery on the nose, with a standard palate and mildly briney flavors of apple and other basic white fruits. Highly regular, with a decent finish. A quaffer or the type of Cava to mix with orange juice.

85 pts. : August 1, 2009

Sweet baked apple flavors run through this sparkler, along with a lime-talc bitterness for balance. For jamón Serrano.

85 pts. : December 15, 2005

Clean and toasty, with mineral and the slightest hint of mushroom. Full and ripe in the mouth, with toasty apple flavors. Limited in depth and complexity, but full of lemon-lime.

85 pts. : December 15, 2002

A hint of pencil shavings highlights this dry-style cava. With its firm structure and cleansing finish, it would work both as an aperitif or with light foods. A value bubbly. Drink now.

84 pts.: Jul 31, 2007

Crisp acidity provides a framework for the notes of apple, cherry pit and nut in this refreshing cava. A good aperitif. Drink now.

84 pts. : May, 1995

Light to medium-bodied, starting out creamy then becoming more citric. Vanilla, apples, pears, minerals and mushrooms.

84 pts. : November 15, 2000

Crisp and on the dry side, with citrus and apple notes, this would make a good aperitif with canapes.

84 pts. : June, 1996

Light-bodied. Mild acidity. Mild fruit. Apricots, sandalwood, wet stones. An austere, minerally theme tightens up this softly structured perfumey sparkler.

Year's Best Summer Sparklers:
The one in the black bottle, this offers gentle flavors of apples and almonds, pleasantly sweet, soft and round, designed as a party wine. Best Buy.

80 pts. : December 1, 1995

The clean aroma of apples that introduces Cordon Negro takes on a light toastiness and touches of cinnamon with successive tastes. The wine in Freixenet’s famous black bottle seems to be cleaner than in the past, perhaps a result of the firm’s effort to dramatically reduce the use of sulfur in their winemaking. The simple fruit flavors are offered in a dry style.

80 pts. : May 15, 1994

An enjoyable, soft and simple sparkling wine, with easy-going fruit and spice flavors.

: October 1, 2009

Freixenet produces millions of cases each year of this ubiquitous, black-bottled sparkling wine. It may not be as complex as Champagne, but it’s a deservedly classic sparking wine, inarguably tasty (and consistent), with fresh lemon-lime flavors that finish on a lightly sweet note.
