This is a finely made mix of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes, light golden in color and dripping in marzipan, hazelnuts and baked bread. Complex and layered, it’s got a depth of soul around zesty acidity, staying fleshy and full on the tongue.

93 pts. : January, 2001

From the pale straw color to the delicate citrus and honeyed aromas, this wine strives for elegance and finesse and largely achieves it. Light but suggesting strawberries and limes Dry, with a rich, creamy texture. It really sands out for elegance and harmony, and finishes on a slightly bitter-almond note.

92 pts. : December 15, 2010

Made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with a splash of Pinot Meunier, this bubbly is, in a word, delicious. It’s so easy to drink, you can’t put the glass down. Shows classic Champagne structure, with refined bubbles and brisk acidity. But the raspberry, strawberry, lime and apple flavors are pure California.

92 pts. : December 31, 2009

The refined texture recommends this brut, which is mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with a splash of Pinot Meunier. It’s an elegant wine, rich in citrus fruits, green apples, raspberries, smoke and creamy yeast, but it’s very young and aggressive. Needs time. Cellar through 2012.

91 pts. : January 15, 1999

Toasty, doughy aromas and pretty fig, apple, melon and citrus flavors offer an attractive blend in this somewhat weighty yet refreshing wine. The finish is long but clean.

91 pts. : Nov/Dec 2004

Tiny bubbles elevate a complex bouquet of almond, honey and buttered toast with a distinctive hint of citrus blossoms; long, soft and creamy with flavors of Fuji apples, candied ginger and a savory hazlenut spice; the flavors intensify and build to a lingering, yet lively, finish.

91 pts.: Apr 30, 2015

A bold bubbly, with classic aromas of apple, ginger and rubber, leading to structured, rich flavors of raspberry, yeast roll, mineral and blanched almond. Drink now through 2017. 10,000 cases made.

90 pts.: December 1, 2013

Chandon’s smaller production sparkler, the étoile Brut is 52% Chardonnay, 37% Pinot Noir and 11% Pinot Meunier, with most of the grapes grown in Napa and Sonoma though the wine is given a North Coast label. It has a toastiness akin to creme brûlée, a bite of yellow cider apple and almond that’s quite savory and a medium finish.

90 pts. : December 1, 2003

Stylish and elegant, a full-bodied brut with plenty of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay character in the fruity, peach and lime flavors. Nice integration, with intensity and balance. The finish is dry and clean, with a hint of hazelnut.

90 pts. : April 1, 2001

Pale yellow hue. Expressively yeasty and citrus-edged aromas follow through on a creamy, medium-bodied palate with zesty fruit flavors and coffee-like notes lingering on the finish.

90 pts. : December 31, 2013

Delicately rich and structured, with floral lemon zest and smoke aromas complementing the taut flavors of apple, fresh ginger and spice. Drink now.

89 pts. : December 31, 2007

Racy aromas of toasty spice, cherry and Fuji apple lead to layered, zesty green apple and vanilla flavors that turn crisp and minerally on the finish. Drink now through 2012.

89 pts. : December 31, 2011

Sleek and minerally, with floral citrus and yeasty apple aromas and focused flavors of lemon and ginger that linger toward the fresh finish. Drink now through 2013.

89 pts. : November 30, 2004

This wine combines richness, with excellent balance and an elegant band of spicy pear, hazelnut and smoky, toasty nuances that offer complexity and concentration. Drink now through 2009.

89 pts. : December 31, 2000

A richly fruity style, with floral apple, pear and black cherry notes, a hint of hazelnut, offering intensity, depth and length. Lively and refreshing. Drink now through 2005.

89 pts. : December 15, 2005

Aromatically complex, with rich ginger, toast, smoke and yeasty baked bread and layers of fig, melon and pear flavors that fan out and expand on the aftertaste, returning to the initial aromatic themes. Drink now.

88 pts. : December 31, 1997

Smoky, toasty, doughy aromas herald this bright-styled bubbly. On the palate it sings out with green apple, ginger, lemon-lime, grapefruit and vanilla flavors. Fresh and lively on the finish.

88 pts. : November 15, 2012

Crisp and sleek, with lively ginger and spice aromas and vibrant citrus, lemon curd and hazelnut flavors. Drink now.

88 pts. : December 1, 2001

Subtle herbs show on the nose of this elegant, tangy blend of Napa and Sonoma fruit. The bright, crisp citrus fruit is offset by a subtle, complex mushroomy hint that adds dimension. Light on the palate, it closes with tart citrus flavors and good length.

88 pts. : November 30, 2003

A delicate, detailed wine, with vivid ginger, spice, cherry and rose petal scents, turning smooth and rich. Drink now through 2008.

88 pts. : December 31, 2006

Keeps the emphasis on the fruit. Distinct for its ripe black cherry and blackberry flavors. Clean aftertaste. Drink now.

87 pts. : November 30, 2009

Boldly structured, this full-bodied bubbly shows spicy baked apple aromas and concentrated tropical fruit, yeast roll and nutmeg flavors. Drink now.

: December 1, 1996

(59% Chardonnay; 30% Pinot Noir; 6% Pinot Blanc; 5% Pinot Meunier.) This very special, elegantly packaged, elegant tasting bottling is made predominantly with base wines from 1990. It earns high honors because of its impeccably clean, bright, unbombastically deep character that sports distinct lemon cream sweetness mixed with hints of toast. As expected, the mousse is mouthfilling and fine-grained, and the wine’s minor edge of sweetness balances its brisk acids without ever interrupting the long and refreshing aftertaste. Stylistically, it falls close to a blancs de blancs yet has some of the depth and body of a brut.

: December 1, 1997

Favoring a the lighter, somewhat leaner style that has become the hallmark of Etoile bottlings, this frothy wine presents clean, slightly citrusy fruit and carries a note of stony spice and quiet yeasty qualities that provide a note of richness. An elegant working that suggests Blanc de Blanc in its basic direction, it will fill the bill nicely in situations where subtlety, rather than dramatic richness, is the called-for character.
