96–100 pts.: 12/1/2008

The wonderful bouquet includes scents of bacon fat, honey, orange rind with deeper smells of black pepper, cinnamon, vanilla bean and pipe tobacco. Entry is silky smooth, semisweet, concentrated and honeyed; the midpalate offers grainy sweet, yet spicy, tangy, fruity, nutty and floral tastes. The oak element really emerges in the aftertaste, ideally completing this sensational blended Scotch. One of the finest blended Scotches in the world.

Honey brown color. Offers aromatic layers that include soft peat smoke, lanolin, bacon fat, raisins, rose petals, and butter. Harmoniously tastes of resiny wood, dried apricots, nuts and malt. Finishes long and deep, with parting flavors of butterscotch, yellow fruit and vanilla.

95 pts.: Spring, 2008

An essay in balance on both the aroma and palate. Silky layers of delicate sweetness (honeyed vanilla, caramel, light toffee) permeate through clean, delicate fruit (citrus, peach, currant), and subtle, complex dried spice. Clean finish, with a hint of dark chocolate. A very versatile, very drinkable blend which suits most moods and occasions. Indeed, a benchmark blended scotch.

Dark golden hue. Toffee and malt aromas follow through on a sweet malty palate with hints of peat and generous spicy flavors on the finish. A rich, well aged whisky showing a sweet malty character that opens up to show rancio notes on addition of a few drops of water.

Sweet, honeyed, caramel notes. The flavor is sweet, with an astringent, citrusy note, and light smokiness drifting on the finish. Mellow, viscous feel.

Brilliant topaz/honey color; unblemished purity. smells immediately of toasted honey wheat bread, bacon fat, honey, and orange rind; further time in the glass allows deeper scents to be generated, including black pepper, cinnamon, vanilla bean, and pipe tobacco. Entry is silky smooth, semisweet, concentrated, and honeyed; the midpalate stage is a tour-de-force of masterful blending by Master Blender Colin Scott; the taste profile is all grainy sweet, yet spicy/tangy, fruity, nutty (hazelnut), and floral. The oak elements really emerges in the aftertaste, closing the circle on this sensational blended Scotch. Along with its primary rival Johnnie Walker Gold 18 Year Old, the finest blended Scotch in the world.

Master Blender Colin Scott’s pinnacle triumph is still this chewy, woody, toffee-like beauty that’s only the slightest smidgen behind rival Johnnie Walker Gold in overall character. I wouldn’t want to have to live on the difference. Another prime specimen of blending genius and Scotch whiskey at its supple, elegant best.

To my way of thinking, Chivas Brothers Master Blender Colin Scott is as good as it gets in the whisky blending game. I keep Chivas 18 around in my office as a late afternoon bracer and I must say that of all the whiskies I have close at hand, it’s the one that I turn to when it’s been a rough day. There’s just something terribly comfortable and reassuring about it that soothes and enlightens and calms. What greater compliment can I offer?

Extra aging offers an amber whisky with an array of fruit, sweet nuttiness and subtle smoke on the aroma. The taste is rich, full and fruity with just a hint of smoke and an impressive finish.

: December, 2008

Medium to dark amber in color with bold aromas and flavors of toasty oak, toffee, dried fruit, smoke, and citrus peel; smooth, earthy, and balanced.
