In the mouth, it’s full-bodied and supple, with silky tannins lining the mouthwatering finish. It should drink well for 3–4 years, perhaps a bit longer.

Juan António Ponce told me 2021 is one of those vintages when you realize in wine you never know everything... He thinks the 2021 Clos Lojen is the most complete vintage ever for this wine, with unusual freshness (despite “normal” parameters like a pH of 3.7 and five grams of acidity) and 12% alcohol. It’s intense and has varietal Bobal typicity with good weight. It fermented in 4,500-liter oak vats with 100% full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in 4,500-, 10,000- and 15,000-liter French oak vats for six months. This is sharp and austere, with lower alcohol and is more mineral than fruit-driven. Incredible value. 60,000 bottles produced.

A new cuvee that’s from higher elevation vineyards, the 2016 Ventoux Edition 1912M is made from 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah that I suspect was brought up all in tank. It’s a ripe, sexy, yet concentrated wine that offers lots of black cherries, violets, lavender, raspberry and mineral-driven aromatics. Clean, medium to full-bodied, and with rock-solid mid-palate depth, it’s going to drink beautifully for upwards of a decade, although there’s absolutely no need to delay gratification. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Another celestial effort from Paul Pontallier and Corinne Mentzelopoulus, the 2005 Margaux, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, boasts a dense opaque blue/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of spring flowers, blueberries, black raspberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and, despite its having spent two years in 100% new wood, only a subtle touch of toasty oak. Although full-bodied, the wine seems light on its feet because of the silky tannins as well as the great gravel terroir from which it comes. Beautiful purity, length, and nobility define this modern day classic. Is it better than the 2000, 1996, 1990, or some of the vintages from the decade of the eighties? Who knows, but it is unquestionably one of the all-time great wines made at Chateau Margaux. This estate has produced only exceptional wines over the last three decades. The seamlessness of the 2005 suggests it will perform well early, but it should last for a half century or more. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2050+.

There is sweet fruit on the attack, but the acidity and tannin quickly kick in, and the finish is tight and restrained. Another 6–12 months of bottle age should reveal even more character. This is a purely made wine that captures the elusive nature of this varietal.

The NV First Estate Reserve Ruby Porto is a blend of typical Douro grapes from Cima Corgo held for four years in used French oak. It comes in with 93 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is produced “to commemorate the firm’s acquisition in 1744 of its first property in the upper Douro Valley, the Casa dos Alambiques at Lugar das Lages.” It’s pretty tight on opening even though it was from a March 2017 bottling (although unless you can read production stamps, that isn’t so easy to determine). Big, dry and rather powerful, this is rather intense on the finish. It shows both classic flavor and fine structure. It is a bit straightforward, though, tending to make its way with power more than any expression of fruit. Still, with its very reasonable price point, this is certainly a good bargain, seeming very much in the “vintage character” style.

The red 2020 Malbec Clásico was produced with 80% grapes from Luján de Cuyo and 20% grapes from Valle de Uco, mostly their own grapes, all in stainless steel and vinified by plot with their native yeasts. It matured in concrete for nine months. It’s ripe without excess and develops a full array of aromas and flavors but keeping 13.5% alcohol, very fresh for the warm year. It’s juicy, complex beyond fruit, a little herbal, medium-bodied and with very fine tannins. It’s clean, expressive and open, a wine that has to be approachable from when you pull the cork. They are working to increase the drinkability, which will be seen more and more in the following years. This represents the largest part of their production with some 500,000 bottles. Considering the year, the nose presents notes of quite fresh plum with hints of herbs, syrup and floral aromas. The 2021 Semi-Sweet Riesling comes in with 34 grams of residual sugar, 7.5 of total acidity and 8.3% alcohol. You won’t mistake this for the Semi-Dry, since this comes with a blue-tinted bottle. This has good acidity to go with its sugar, but it is certainly well off dry, if you’re wondering. It’s easily the friendliest of the regular Rieslings from the winery this year (including the Dry and Semi-Dry), showing a touch of sugar around the edges to go with a fresh demeanor. This is a nice performance at this level for this vintage. It might be a step short of distinguished, but in the price category, there is plenty of bang for the buck.
