Polished and direct, with a beam of red and black cherry fruit laced with modest tobacco and licorice notes. Drink now.

I always love a good Carménère. The best ones are full-flavored without being overly heavy, and have lots of lovely layers of spice and herbaceous notes on top of the rich black fruit. And when I’m looking for a terrific Carménère for under $15, the Casa Lapostolle has always been my first choice. The pepper and cloves are pretty powerful, but there are lots of deep currant and black cherry notes, and the result is complex and intriguing, rather than unbalanced. My favorite pairing is spicy paella with lots of green and red peppers, but I can easily see pairing this with barbecued chicken or Polish sausage, and it’s excellent with grilled vegetable-based dishes as well.
