Licorice, fig and chocolate notes frame sweet plum and black cherry flavors in this generous red. The tannins are full but gentle, and lively acidity keeps it all fresh. Drink now through 2014.

Staff Picks

Dan Updike: April 9, 2010

Deep ruby-garnet in color, this wine has an expressive nose of berries and cream. After twelve months in American oak, the blackberry and black cherry fruit have had a chance to bond, creating a hint of vanilla and a trace of toast on the finish. Inexpensive Rioja of this quality doesn’t come along all that often. Snap this one up while you can.

Ryan Clark: April 13, 2010

A smooth, plump, red-ruby colored Tempranillo — with an added 10% Graciano — carrying violet tones, wood-spice aromas and a well-balanced, medium body that glides gently and effortlessly across the palate. Black fruits entwine with plum, cherry, essence of preserve and vanilla flavors. This silky-smooth Crianza is aged 12 months in American oak barrels and integrates acidity with tannin karmatically for a secular balance. All grapes for this wine come from the sub-region of Rioja Baja. The Burgo Viejo Rioja outperforms its modest price and should pair well with most foods.

Stephen Boyd: March 31, 2011

Lush and balanced, Burgo Viejo Rioja is characterized by black fruit and plum notes on the nose leading to an explosion of berries and rich, velvety spice on the palate. The expressive finish is marked by chocolate and more subtle spice notes. A deliciously elegant value, perfect for everyday drinking.

A beautiful blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, aged for 12 months in American oak barrels. Bold black fruit with vanilla and cedar notes characterize the nose and palate, while the finish is smooth and dry, resulting in a complex, food-friendly red to serve with lamb, roast pork or sausage dishes.
