Hesketh The Proposition

Every once in a while we taste a wine that’s so good, the staff actually fights over who gets to write it up — and I won the draw on the Hesketh Proposition. The depth and complexity of this Australian sparkler are reminiscent of a high-end Champagne rosé, and the price is incredible for the quality that it delivers. A rather unusual blend of Chardonnay, Sèmillon and Shiraz, which gives you ripe, juicy strawberries, mangoes and bright citrus fruit flavors that are complemented by yeasty bread dough and graham cracker notes. The bright fruit up front is balanced by great structure and acidity, and finishes dry. Don’t be put off by the crown closure — the Proposition over-delivers enough on taste to make up for the lack of the traditional “pop” of the cork. Delicious!
