Aroma is herbal, with a trace of honey, then blossoms into a bouquet that’s peppery, herbal, waxy, floral. Palate is medium-bodied, oily, resiny, herbal and semisweet, with balanced flavors of green pepper, red pepper, toffee and honey. Finishes gracefully.

Yes, this is the brand founded by rock star Sammy Hagar, former front man for Van Halen. Stop rolling your eyes: This is a robust, addictive Tequila, especially recommended for those who love peaty Scotches. The spirit has a sweet scent of ripe oranges and vanilla, powerful butterscotch and honey flavors and a raucous smoky finish.

Pale gold in color and, like its sibling, the Blanco, displays sediment beneath the examination lamp; the fine, early aroma is off-dry and gently herbal, with a trace of honey backnote — allowing it another six minutes in the glass, the aroma blossoms into a harmonious, integrated bouquet that’s peppery, herbal, waxy and even floral, with a sensational parting wave of English toffee — a restrained understated aromatic masterpiece for tequila; the palate entry is medium-bodied, oily, resiny, herbal and semisweet — the mid-palate displays exceedingly refined and balanced flavors of green pepper, red pepper, light toffee and light honey. It finishes as gracefully and politely as it began, with subtle hints of fresh herbs (in particular sage and thyme), toffee and oil; I don’t know of a better more finely crafter reposado in the marketplace; a classic distilled spirit that deserves your immediate attention and one that should be served neat in a wide mouthed Old-Fashioned glass; an outstanding achievement.

As a big fan of Cabo Wabo, I felt the need to get at least one of them onto the list. I chose this expression because I think it’s their finest bottling to date. It owns a richness and a depth of flavor that’s more akin to many anejos, yet as an ingredient to cocktails, Cabo Wabo Repo shines like a beacon.
