Elizabeth Lyman: August 2, 2010
This wine comes to us from McLaren Vale, one of South Australia’s top wine regions. When you first swirl and smell this wine, you will notice aromas of intense ripe raspberry, exotic spice and black pepper. On the palate, this velvety wine exhibits ripe, juicy plum and berry notes, along with vanilla from being aged in new French oak for 14 months. The small percentage of Viognier (8%) adds brightness, slight citrus aromas and balance — a style adopted from the renowned Côte-Rotie appellation of the Northern Rhône. This wine is a great accompaniment to a thick grilled steak, charred on the outside and juicy on the inside; or, if you’re feeling fancy, black pepper braised lamb shanks. The soft tannins and luscious drinkability also make this elegant, structured wine perfect for festive holiday parties.
